This is a memorial shrine for a deceased family member that would be placed in one's home. Maybe next to photos or personal items. It is 1 foot 3 inches in height and just under 6 inches across the base. The Chinese writing which is carved into the face explains who the shrine is for: This man is one of the 20 grandchildren of Pan(their grandfather's family name. This man's name is Pan Cun Dian(Cun pronounced Tsun. This shrine was built as a memorial to him by his children to be placed in their home. The Chinese writing which is written says; This man was born the night of December 15th. 1834. This man died between 1am and 3am on September 5th. 1899. It states the Chinese birth and death dates. Which are by the lunar calendar. His son and daughter buried him at BaDongShengQi Mountain. Qi pronounce Chee. When this ancestral memorial ... morewas created is unknown. Since t here is both traditional and simplified Chinese writing displayed on the shrine. There is a possibility this shrine was made post revolution. So the dates of death and when this shrine was made may not coincide. ESTATE: Although I don't know much about sewing. The minute I saw this amazing artwork I knew it was something special! Produced sometime around the turn of the twentieth century, perhaps for the 1893 Columbus Exposition in Chicago) the extraordinary detail captured in this freestyle-sewn textile initially resembles a photograph or realistic painting.until you get up close. The entire piece of art is made up of intricately placed stitches using silver(white) bronze and gold threads in various gradations of tone. The subject matter is the Shinto shrine at Itsukushima. The colors are basically white(or silver) Gold and bronze against a mauve silk background. From what I have been able to gather this type of Japanese fine art textile is fragile which is why there are few left outside of museums. Even though, from what I understand, this ... moreparticular piece has been stored under a bed for the past 50 years it also shows its age. There are a couple of minor thread pulls, some damage to the silk background(not extending into the live image area) and some staining of the fabric matte. Hummel"Forest Shrine" 183 Trademark 1 with incised crown mark on bottom. Very rare. Stands nine inches tall. Excellent condition. No cracks or chips. One tiny tip of one antler(1/16th inch) has been professionally repaired. Repair is undetectable. This mark is very rare to find. Was made shortly after WW11-late forties according to Hummel collector's book. The sculptor of the piece finished his design in 1946. The piece was released after that. This piece is one of the first released based on the marks. It only has a crown incised mark and no"V" or"bee" mark. Has been stored in a locked display case out of the sun. Non-smoking environment.

This has some very awesome details, the main portion is made of some kind of metal(it looks like stainless steel) the rest I am not sure of. There are some repairs I have noticed two of his claws have been repaired and there is a chip- very small on the tip of a fin in the back. Antique Kavad Wooden Hand Carved Hindu Portable Teaching Temple Shrine India Art
This is a Kavad. It is a portable teaching temple. In small villages in India. Particularly in the state of Rajasthan, if a village does not have a temple of it's own, wandering priests, known as"Kawadia Bhat" carry these mobile shrines from village to village and use these to teach the local people. They tell their stories, accompanied by singing, and open the doors of the Kavad as the story goes along. This Kavad is hand carved. And is very old. It shows signs of much handling. It is 12 and 1/2 inches long, 8 inches wide, and a little over 5 inches high. It is not intended to stand upright on it's own. Rather, it is meant to rest in the lap of the teacher. All of the panels can be removed, if you are careful. Included is an old type-written description of the stories that are painted on the panels.
