Rare Antique African Hand-Forged Iron Double Snake Spiral/Dogon Shrine, Ancestor
Rare. A ntique hand forged iron double snake sculpture. The two snakes twisted around each other and forming a coil or spiral with a horned snake at the top. 8 1/2" H x 7" W at bottom of spiral; an old rust patina showing age. Research from the only similar piece I could find on the internet(as opposed to the many. More common Lobi snake currency works) stated that this is a Dogon ancestor figure, in the shape of a snake that led the people to their present home. It would have been placed in a shrine and probably used in the Lebe cult. Item came from the very large estate of African art that belonged to a long time Santa Fe collector and dealer who bought many of his things in the 1960's and 1970's when he had a gallery in Santa Fe.
