This a vintage early Showa period(c. 1930's) Japanese chataku. Or teacup saucer. It is made of pewter with a copper wash which has been formed into a 4 pedal plum blossom design with a central image(picture 3) of Meiji Jingu(shrine) with a tori gate on its left(see picture 4) and on the right(picture 5) is the paulownia mon(family crest) Above and below are Japanese scripts which say, Commemorating Meiji Jingu. Emperor Meiji was the first emperor to take power from the Tokogawa Shogun in 1868. He was the emperor from 1868 until he died in 1912. This chataku measure 4 1/4" long by 3 1/4" wide(11 by 8.5 cm) Despite its age(approximately 70 years old) Having been in storage most of its life, with the exception to some minor oxidation it remain in very fine condition. Hand built with carved accents of dragons in multiple areas and a hinged carved Lotus flower header. 2 drawers which each have 2 Mother of Pearl inlay designs. There's a tray that extends from just above the drawers to display additional items. Exceptional detail in the top section of the cabinet which can be seen in image#7. I couldn't get a true translation of the Chinese script from the previ ous owner but he exp lained it to me an something like this. Minor dust and smudges which seem to be able to clean of with proper care. I just wiped of the dust for photos and avoided any chemicals or moisture. ITEM APPROXIMATE DIMENSIONS: 16 1/2” deep X 27” wide X 7 4” high. The tray extended makes the depth 2 4” The hinged carved header piece lowered drops it to about 71” high. The figure shows age and long use through the timeless surface with signs of wear throughout the body. Liittle is known about objects of this type. Figures among the Urhobo. A part from the fact that among the Urhobo such figures were mainly used as persomal shrine(Iphri) which uses are similar to those of the Ikenga Shrine figures from the Igbo. The box has a wire on the back for hanging on a wall. The exterior measures@ 12 inches x 23 inches x 3 1/2 inches. The wood shadow box has reverse painted glass front with words"Blessed Be Thy Holy Name" Behind the glass is the statue of the Mother Mary holding her dying son Jesus. It is made of white plastic that has a pearlized or shimmery look to it. The statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a seperate piece that fits into the shrine. The statue measures 3 3/4" tall. Vntg Antique Catholic Table Altar Shrine Cross Communion Last Rights Cabinet Box
Beautiful old table or wall altar which used to be in the old St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Covington. KY. The church opened in 1872 and was torn down in 1967, so I do not know the actual age of this item, but it has to be at least 45 years old and probably much older. This stands about 17 1/2" high and is 9 1/4" wide and overall is in pretty good condition. The front panel closes with metal hinges, which are still intact. The plastic-type material plate on the front panel door depicts an angel on each side and the 14 stations in the center. The top 2 corners of the plate have cracked apart but the tiny pieces are still attached to the panel door. The Jesus figure and larger crucifix are in good condition. The candle holders have some rust. Behind the panel door is a smaller crucifix, spoon and small plate in the satin lined ... morecompartment. The spoon and plate have some rust and corrosion, but the small cross is in very good condition. This item could use some restoration, but is still a lovely old piece as is.
