We want this to be a great transaction for both of us. Thanks! The builder of the miniatures at the was a Benedictine Monk- Brother Joseph Zoettl. O.S.B. Born in Landshut, Bavaria in 1878, he was maimed in an accident that gave him a hunchback, but luckily it did not hurt his ability to bend over and build the miniatures. He came to Saint Bernard Abbey in 1892. After becoming a Brother in the Benedictine Order, he was appointed to the power plant for the Abbey, and while there he developed his hobby of building miniature shrines. In contemplating the Main Grotto. Which was to be the centerpiece of the whole park, Br. Joseph had yet to decide on the type of ... morebuilding materials he would employ and where they would come from. A partial solution was handed to him on April 29, 1933, when there was a derailment of the L&N railroad about twenty miles away near Vinemont, Alabama. One freight car full of marble from the Gantt Quarry, Sylacauga, Alabama overturned and the marble was crushed. It was useless to the owner so he gave it to Saint Bernard. The monks went up and carted it down to Saint Bernard; it was exactly what Brother Joseph needed as the main stalactites to hang in the Great Grotto. The material which adorned the works had been donated by people who admired and had seen the beauty in his previous works: the small grottoes enclosing Father Lawrence O'Leary's bargain statues. Crucifixes, ash trays, etc. People sent colored glass, marbles, cold cream jars, punctured commode floats, wrecked marble, broken bathroom tile, costume jewelry, gifts from every state in the union and from many foreign countries. The first replicas were erected on the monastery recreation grounds. But because of the large number of visitors, a new site was selected and on May 17, 1934 the Ave Maria Grotto was dedicated. Ando Hiroshige(Japanese, 1797-1858) The title of this striking image is Torii and Festival at the Itsukushima Shrine in Aki Province. It is from Hiroshige’s breathtaking series Famous Views of the 60-Odd Provinces and was published by Senkakudo in 1905. A 109 years ago. Prints from this edition were reproduced in such detail and have aged with such a beautiful patina that they are often mistaken for originals. They are, without a doubt, among the finest reprints ever made of this incredible series. Consequently, serious collectors eagerly seek them. This is one of Hiroshige’s most famous designs. It is the gigantic tori, over 52 feet high, marking the entrance to the Shinto ... moreshrine at Itsukushima. The Itsukushima Shrine became the 22nd Imperial Shrine. I have seen these advertised as from the 50's or 60's- buy I don't find any real proof of that that. The Syrian Shrine Temple still operates. This is a really nice rustic dear diary box. I don't know the history of this piece. Other than it might have been purchased in the gift shop in the Grotto Shrines Park in Rudolph, Wisconsin. I remember writing in a diary kept in a box like this, at a hotel I stayed in, left there for various travelers to write in. This particular box is varnished on the top and sides, and has a latch. The dimensions are 6 x 4.75 x 1.75 inches. It has various dings and scrapes, which I think adds to it's character. It also has melted candle wax on the top, which I can remove if the person purchasing it requests it. I believe the wood is cedar. Payment is expected within two days of placing a winning bid. This auction is for a Rare Saint Joseph with baby Jesus Military Soldier Pocket Shrine in Tin Case. Shrine is Silvered Pewter. This one is World War II Era. These were carried by Military Soldiers in the trenches of the battle feild.Shrine is approximately an inch high. Case is an inch high by 5/8 inch wide. Extends open to an 1 1/4 inch.
