Carved figures among the Ogoni are primarily seen attached to the top of masquerade headdresses(Ka-elu) for the menâs Ekpo secret society and less often as free-standing figures. The Toshogu Shrine was built for the first Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa by his grandson. The third Shogun Iyemitsu. It is the mausoleum of Ieyasu who is one of the most important figures in Japanese history, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate that lasted for over 250 years until 1867. The Toshogu Shrine is very famous for its colorful and sumptuously decorated buildings that are unlike the typical simple styled built Shinto shrines. The carving of the curled up sleeping cat among the peonies(Nemuri Neko) is located on the top of Kuguri-mon Gate and it was said to have been carved by the famous temple carpenter Jingoro Hidari(southpaw Jingoro) The cat represents the wish for peace and happiness in the world that acts as a good luck charm as well. Masonic Sword Scabbord Engraved Name Ancient Order Mystic Shrine Horstmann
Estate found in what I believe to be very good vintage condition. Collected by one of my relatives for display. There is a name on the sword: William J Jacobs and marked as made by the Horstmann Company Philadelphia Pa. I tried to take pictures to demonstrate its condition from a lot of angles. The sword is a total of 34 inches long; fits tightly into scabbard. There is some obvious enamel loss; the handle looks like some kind of bone and is nicely etched. The whole thing could use a good cleaning. There are a couole of dark spots at the edge of the sword but it is shiny and lots of pretty gold tone engraving.
