RUSSIAN TEMPERA PAINTED ICON: MOTHER of GOD of KAZAN
The Icon of the Mother of God of Kazan made its apparition on 1579 at Kazan the capital of Tartar Khaganat recently captured by the Russians. The iconography subject is closely associated with a Greek icon of the Hodigitria Mother of God. By this Icon young people are blessed at the altar. The feasts were established on 22 October(5 November) and 8(21) July. This Russian Orthodox Icon was painted by a modern professional church artist at the Russian town Rybinsk(not far from Moscow) that is one of the main and old centers of the Russian icon painting. The icon was painted on a very old(probably 18 century) wooden board with the shrine i.e. the rectangular hollow at the middle part designed for the image. The margins are above the hollow. The shrines mostly belong to the antique icons from the 18 century and earlier. The board was covered ... morewith levkas(gesso. Special priming) The central part was gilded. Both are in excellent condition. The smaller one is double sided. They are not signed but came out of an estate where the person lived over in Russia for 20 years back in the 1980s. The Icon is by far the finest and earliest example I have sold in years with the Solid Silver"frame" being fully Hallmarked for St Petersburg 875 Grade(87.5% Pure) Solid Silver and is Dated. I believe it says 1857 but it is worn, I have tried my best to show it in the photos. The Icon is in excellent all original condition having not been polished in many decades at least and retaining much of the Rich Gold Gilding. The hand done Oil Painting appears to be in very fine condition, again just very dirty and the Solid Silver"frame" is in good condition with some minor losses and signs of the great age throughout. The Icon displays very nicely measuring 7" tall by 5-3/4" wide and is hand painted on a wood panel. I really know nothing about Icons but I am sure few dated examples with Russian Solid Silver come up for auction often, especially selling with no reserve! Sterling Silver Oklad, exceptional painting of the Mother of God image.The talented artist happened to create an expression of high spirituality in the image of Mother of God. Beautiful icon! Silver work is complicated and detailed. The icon is marked 84 with the town mark in the cartouche that was used in the period of 1882-1899. Beginning in the mid of 19th century a standard silver mark 84 and a town mark was punched close beside each other, often look like a single mark. There is also the maker's mark in Cyrillic letters: CK3"The icon was made in Moscow as it is stamped with the town mark depicting St. George slaying the Dragon that was in use in the second half of the 19th century. The icon is AUTHENTIC not a recent reproduction.The painting is made by hand and ... moreis in a good condition due to the age, could be professionally cleaned if desired. The silver Oklad has some oxidation but could be cleaned. There is no damage to the face of the icon but the back of it has some slightly burned part of wood(look at the pictures) and the velvet fabric was damaged by the fire and faded due to the age. VERY RARE AND LARGE ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ICON 19TH CENTURY DIMENTIONS: 40X30 CM SUBJECT:THE BEAHEADING OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST TECHNIQUE:OIL PAINTS ON WOOD. VARNISH AGE:SECOND HALF OF 19TH CENTURY PROVENANCE:SOUTHERN RUSSIA This is a veray rare and authentic 100% antique russian icon of saint John the baptist. Dated around 1870-1890, probably from southern Russia or Ucraine. The icon is very well preserved, it has not been cleaned or restored, it is 100 authentic and contains the authentic varnish which gives a very nice light yellow oxidised patina. It depicts the beheading of Saint John the Baptist in jail and in the corner we see Salome the princess who is waiting to take the head in order to offer it it her mother. The icon is painted by a very talented master and belonges in the academic school of iconpainting that dominated in the Russian ... moreiconopainting in the 19th century. Especially in the bic cities which were more influenced by the western art. His parents, Isidore and Agathia Moshnin, lived in Kursk, Russia; Isidore was a merchant. At the age of 10, Prokhor became seriously ill. During the course of his illness, he saw the Mother of God in his sleep, who promised to heal him. Several days later there was a religious procession in Kursk with the locally revered ... moremiracle-working icon of the Mother of God. Due to bad weather, the procession took an abbreviated route past the house of the Moshnin family. After his mother put Prokhor up to the miracle-working image, he recovered rapidly. While at a young age, he needed to help his parents with their shop, but business had little appeal for him. Young Prokhor loved to read the lives of the saints, to attend church, and to withdraw into seclusion for prayer. At the age of 18. Prokhor firmly decided to become a monk. His mother blessed him with a large copper cross which he wore over his clothing all his life. After this, he entered the Sarov monastery as a novice. Monastic Life From day one in the monastery. Exceptional abstinence from food and slumber were the distinguishing features of his life. He ate once a day, and little. On Wednesdays and Fridays he ate nothing.
