HALF A MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPT MISSAL LEAF, VELLUM, FRANCE, C.1150.
This is half of a Missal leaf that was produced in France c.1150. The text is from the Office for Good Friday and includes three parts of the Passion sequence from Saint John’s Gospel. Together with the first of the Collects following this sequence. Whilst the fragment is not illuminated(there is no gold or silver) It is decorated. It has one three-line initial“O” in skeletal form with“white vine” decoration in the centre. The outer segment of the initial coloured with a pale yellow wash, and one large two-line initial in red. The size of the fragment is 186mm x 268mm(7 3/10ins. x 10 6/10ins. The fragment is ruled in blind(on the recto) and prickings remain in the outside margin for all the horizontal lines. The text begins above the top line. The left column of the recto includes. In red, the Sign of the Cross“ before words spoken by Jesus) ... moreand“ c” after Jesus has spoken) Please be aware of the condition of this item. What you can see in the picture is what the winning bidder will receive. Above the bottom line of text the fragment has a crease and there are binding holes. These indicate that it was perhaps once a flyleaf in a book. There are five small cuts at the bottom where it has been removed from binding strings. Considering its age and probable later use. This is a very nice, clean, fragment from a manuscript written by an expert scribe and with a superb white vine initial. It is of a type, age and quality that is infrequently seen. Walnut stained Wood Catholic Church Missal Stand Bible Book Holder Altar Mass
This auction is for a Wooden Missal Stand for use on the altar to hold the Sacramentary for Catholic Mass. This piece could also easily be used as a book or Bible holder. It is adjustable to 3 different heights depending on the height or reading angle preference of the priest saying the Mass. The measurements of the book platform are just under 17" wide by just under 12" high and with a bottom shelf lip of about 1.25" deep. At the highest setting. It stands a little over 11" from the altar/table top below. I don't know wood that well, but I would guess that this is oak with a walnut stain, because the color is pretty dark. This one is similar to my other listing of an open wood stand, just that this one is a little larger and darker in color. Some scratches to the wood surface, too- this is definitely a used piece.

Click on the image for a detailed view. A rare leaf from a Monastic Missal. On heavy laid paper, printed in Venice in the year 1507 A.D. by Lucantonio Giunta, a printer and engraver. This Missal was intended for use by the Italian Cassinese Congregation, a part of the Benedictine Order, founded in 1408. There are thirty-six lines of black and red Gothic text in two columns. Leaves containing music consist of a four line stave in red with black notes and text. Numerous full-page and small woodcuts are found throughout the Missal. Giunta, originally from Florence, incorporates the Florentine city emblem, The Fleur de Lye in his printer’s device, which is found on the last page of the Missal. Choir Missal Highly Illuminated Manuscript with Monks This piece measures about 14" wide by 21.5" high. It is written on both sides. It is a five line staff music sheet. The staff lines are red and the ink is ... morebrown with the exception of a few red letters or words. One side has a large E with gold and greenish blue embellishments. The bottom of the page is also decorated with gold and greenish blue embellishments with some red. On the same side is six monks which run vertical in the margin. Two of the monks are wearing green robes and four are wearing brown robes. Each is posed in a slightly different position. Each has the tops of their heads shaved and their heads are surrounded by halos. The halos are colored in gold and each robe has some gold one each one. This piece was not double framed and this is the side that was shown through the glass so it is more yellowed. Most likely from exposure to light. The opposite side is less yellowed and only has the words written in brown and red. There is a large C written in red. There are condition issues. In addition to the yellowing on both sides(one more so than the other side) two corners are torn and missing. Both on the same side of the page. A small tear at the top and bottom. Someone also used clear tape on the pages when can clearly be seen. The tape is no longer there but you can see were the tape has been. There is a crease at the

Spain, circa late sixteenth to early seventeenth century, in Latin on extremely heavy vellum(approximately 550x385mm, or 21-1/2x15-1/4 inches) Text is in a Spanish rounded gothic hand(Rotunda) Music consists of five staves formed of five lines. On the fifth line of music there is a wonderful initial"B" in red ink on a rectangular ground of brown penwork. This Antiphon is dedicated to St. Didacus. Confessor, a Spanish Dominican of the sixteenth century; notes as a theologian, philosopher, and astronomer; who died in 1560. His feast is celebrated on November 12. The Gradual is formed from the Psalms. Set to musical annotation. Before the appearance Missale Romanum by pope Pius V in 1570, separate works were used to conduct Mass, including the Gradual, Evangelary and the Epistolary. This edition of the Gradual post dates the first publication of the'Missale Romanum' and appears to be rare. FOR SALE WITHOUT RESERVE. Large folio. Measuring approx 27cm by 41.5cm, bound in later blind ruled reverse calf with five raised bands to spine. The contents are complete in 199 foliated leaves(with some mis-numbering noted. Correct as per register) Printed on thick paper in black and red throughout. With numerous large ... moredecorative initials and historiated woodcut vignettes, large woodcut printers device to title leaf and repeated to colophon at rear. Please Condition: The binding is holding firmly and is in good condition. With some general wear to surface/ extremities from handling, rather scuffed and bumped. Textblock is firm, a few leaves working a little loose but for the most part in very good crisp condition internally, first and final couple of gatherings browned and water stained, some resultant chipping/ erosion to lower corners of first and final eight or so leaves and a few marginal tears though with letterpress largely unaffected, final two leaves with chip/ tear to top inside corner affecting a few inches of letterpress, the colophon leaf most notably chipped, a few marginal worm holes/ tracks which occasionally touch into lower line of text or catchwords though without serious loss of sense, some light water staining and finger marking at points elsewhere but for the most part a good crisp copy.
