I am proud to offer here for auction this superbly executed 19c Chinese carved sandalwood gloves box in a nice large size with all sides and top worked in very deep relief and signed to the underside. This fine box was produced in Canton. China during the height of the"Old China Trade" era and exported to the West. This is one of the higher quality boxes that I have come across with the entire outside surfaces being saturated with many figures that are seated and walking while engaged in conversation holding fans and performing leisurely tasks amoungst outdoor and garden settings surrounded by large leafy plants, rockery and mountain landscapes along with garden seats, tables, fences and stairways as well as a bridge and covered sampan. There are also willow, prunus and dogwood trees with pagodas, small thatched roof huts and a ... morevariety of Chinese architectural elements with all edges framed in either geometric patterns or as in the top there is a well done continuous leaf boarder. The hardware is in fine working order including a working lock and key having the inside finished to a smooth texture with the artists signature to the underneath. Condition is excellent having a wonderful caramel coloring with a soft surface patina with no significant chips, cracks, losses or repairs only having light age and usage wear which is incredible considering this box is 150 years old. Wonderful antique document box made in China circa 1900. It is a deeply carved sandalwood. The carving is in several layers and goes as deep as 1/2" The scene depicted includes people. Trees, buildings and bridges. Extremely well carved with excellent detail. The box is 10 1/4" x 3 3/4" x 3" It is lined with a red velvet material. It has a lock that works and the original key is included. This is a fine box of exception quality and detail in good condition. A rare find and an item any collector would be proud to own. STUNNING 19th C ANTIQUE CHINESE CARVED SANDALWOOD CASKET
This is an absolutely exquisite 19th century Antique Chinese carved sandalwood casket. It is embellished on every panel with the most detailed and intricate carving I have ever seen. Depicting figures standing beside Pagodas that are adorned with Lotus blossoms. It has a hinged lid that opens up to reveal a red felt lined inner tray that lifts out using two little hinged brass handles. On the top of the inner rim of the box there is a label with some Chinese character marks. I'm assuming that this is the makers signature but I could be wrong. Underneath the tray there is another larger felt lined compartment. It does have all it's original metalware including hinges and escutcheon, although sadly there is no longer a key. There is some damage to mention. Mainly two corner pieces that join the front and side panel and the side and ... moreback panel.There is also a crack that runs along the back panel. The box stands on 4 little bracket feet that are all sound and in tact. SUPERB 19C CHINESE CANTONESE EXPORT CARVED SANDALWOOD LIDDED BOX 'CHINA TRADE'
I am very pleased to offer here this superb mid 19c Chinese export deeply carved sandalwood lidded box with super high quality workmanship and details. This box was produced in Canton. China during the height of the"Old China Trade" era sometime around c1850 or so with most of these being exported to the West. This particular box measures a modest L 5" x D 3-1/2" but the quantity of quality carving you would normally find on much larger sizes as the carver really packed in the subject matter with the entire outside of the box being saturated with numerous figures being portrayed in outdoor garden and terraced settings with the top panel having the greatest scenes which contain figures engaged in leisurely conversation, walking and carrying objects with detailed garments and large sun hats even showing realistic facial ... morefeatures. These figures are surrounded by so much in such a defined area that it takes a while to absorb it all such as fences, stone bridges, rockery and stairways as well as prunus, willow and dogwood trees along with fabulous detailed buildings, interiors of such, fancy roof designs and other various architectural elements. The outside of this great carved panel is a wide boarder of a continuous display of several types of open flower heads, leaves, stems and buds and yet to the very outside another boarder of nicely done single acanthus style leaves. All four sides are different from one another but all contain figures surrounded by similar designs found on the top panel and again framed by continuous single leaf designs. The inside and underside are left smooth with a pair of brass hinges that are in fine working condition with the lid closing snug and only having a small amount of a gap just above where the lock would have been but in these small boxes only a very few would have had locks on them due to the size. For your consideration we have here a superb mid 19c Chinese export deeply carved sandalwood desk or document box in a large size saturated on top and all four sides with figures in Chinese daily life scenes. This fine box was produced in Canton. China in C1850 or there abouts during the height of the"Old China Trade" era for the export market destined to the West. This is a very large box of this type as most normally the larger ones were made as gloves boxes and were about the same length or perhaps 1/2" less in length and were only about 3-3/4" deep and this one is 6-1/4" deep and 10" in length so it is almost like two boxes in one. The top of the lid is decorated with numerous figures amoungst outdoor scenes engaged in conversation while walking and sitting with almost every standing or walking figure is ... morecarrying some type of object and the sitting figures are shown around stone tables and on porches playing perhaps the game of go and also showing them holding objects as well. There are willow, prunus and dogwood trees along with plants, flowers and rockery as well as porcelain garden seats and a number of paneled and openwork designed fences. There are also a variety of buildings, pagodas and covered porches seen with many out lookers and with a great variety of Chinese architectural elements and outside this large scene on the lid there is a double gadrooned type border. All four sides of the box have similar outdoor scenes as the top but in a smaller scale with several different type borders and the interior and underside are finished with a dark red material. Condition overall is excellent with just minor wear having a wonderful medium brown color with a good patinized finish the hinges are in good working condition with the lid opening and closing perfectly and there is a key but the lock does not seem to be working otherwise a wonderful box in great condition considering it is 150 years old now. This is prerevolution Chinese Sandalwood jewelry box. It probably dates to the 30s. It is all ornately hand carved. There is some slight damage on the bottom that I have depicted in one of the photos. Is not in perfect condition. But I've seen worse on eBay for more money.

This Chinese carved wood box was bought at an upscale estate and is very old 19th century. The carving is so detailed and deep on the top and all 4 sides. There are some chips to the carving you can see in photos if you look close and the nail has come loose on the border as shown and a crack on bottom. I think for its age its in excellent condition but could use a cleaning. I have taken large photos to try and show the detail and beauty of this rare Chinese box. Here we have for auction a splendid c1850s Chinese deeply carved sandalwood calling card case in a nice larger size with a superb color tone and is signed to the inside tongue of the bottom section. This fine card case was produced in Canton. China during the"Old China Trade" era around the c1850s and has remained in excellent condition developing a gorgeous patinized surface sheen. The outside of the entire case is worked in deep relief with at least 5 levels of depth being back carved and under cut giving that 3D appearance depicting numerous figures sitting, walking and engaged in relaxed conversation carrying objects with many standing along side of winding spindled and paneled fences also peering out of window openings and porches surrounded with plants, garden seats and rockery as well as willow, prunus and dogwood trees. ... moreThere are also many buildings, pagodas and dwellings with masonry facades along with a variety of Chinese architectural elements. Condition is excellent with the top fitting nice and snug with the only flaws being that when the top section is removed there are what appears to be some a couple infills and some tight age cracks at the inside corners where most all the old card cases develop the same types of things but I cannot find any other chips or any types of losses or damage that I could find as this is a very well executed case and was no doubt a product of one of the top 4 or 5 Canton shoppes. Scalloped edges on the top and bottom. Interior tray lined with velvet. Approximately 10-3/8 inches long. 4-1/2 inches wide, and 3-3/8 inches tall. Dates to the late Qing period. Generally good condition with minor wear to surface/finish at corners and I found four missing heads: 2 on the top and 2 on the front(all pictured) Notice on the underside(hidden)of one of the corners where the wood has worn off a bit. The little crack UC on the bottom is only on the surface, it doesn't go down into the wood so it's still structurally solid there.
