Antique Chinese Pipa Rare Historic Musical Instrument Qing Period
Antique Pipa This is a rare opportunity to acquire a beautiful original antique Pipa. In excellent condition for it's age. This probably belongs in a museum. The only similar examples which I can find are located in the British Museum and the Met in New York. The pipa has 17 frets and a type of scale which I believe dates it to either very late 19th century or very early 20th century(late Qing period) The upper frets are made from carved ox horn which have a wonderful translucence in the light. The lower frets I think are bamboo. The top has a lovely carved bat. The craftsmanship is of a very high standard throughout. I can't find any maker's mark anywhere on the instrument. The bridge has a carving of lions, I think, please correct me if I'm wrong. If anyone can offer any more information then please do let me know and I'll ... moreadd it to the listing. There is a tiny repair to the top where someone has inserted a small screw to secure a very small crack in the wood around one of the tuner peg holes. The pipa currently has some guitar strings in place as I can't seem to find the correct strings here in the UK. I can't play the pipa myself so I've no idea how it plays as an instrument but it's certainly a joy to look at. I enjoy just holding it and imagining where and when this may have been played. The pipa belonged to my late father and was stored away for many years. My father collected many fine musical instruments on his travels and I know that he spent time in Hong Kong in the late 1940s. I don't know for sure as this was never discussed but I suspect this may be where and when he acquired the pipa. You are very welcome to come and view the pipa.
