Le devote meditationi di S. Agostino. Con li soliloquij. il Manuale: nella volgar lingua tradotte In Venetia presso Gio. Antonio Bertano. 1576. A rare religious book in two parts. Attributed to 4th century St Augustine of Hippo: the"Soliloquies" and"Meditations" The Meditations are his treatises on the love of God. The Soliloquies, in two books. Takes the form of an"inner dialogue" in which questions are posed, discussions take place and answers are provided, leading to self-knowledge. The first book begins with an inner dialogue which seeks to know a soul; in the second book it becomes clear that the soul Augustine wants to get to know is his own. A fascinating and engaging work. Up for auction is a vinta g e Civil War Era Soldier letter datelined S t Augustine Florida Sept. 5. 1864. letter, written on patriotic letterhead, was from Warren, who was apparently from New Hampshire. Warren didn't give us much info about himself. Letter is hard for me to read. But from what I gathered, Warren's Regiment is being replaced in St. Augustine by the 7 th Regiment. Of I am assuming, New H ampshire. paper has quite a b it of staining and has yellowed from time. MULTIPLE AUCTION WINNERS:Please wait until I send an invoice before paying. March Day St. Augustine Florida 1885 Harpers Weekly antique wood engraving A March Day in St. Augustine. Florida Issued. 1885 by Harpers Weekly Art by F. H. Taylor Fine original antique wood engraving. Printed in the mid 19th century. On quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. In Good+ or better condition. Overall very clean, paper is age toned and somewhat brittle, short minor edge splitting repaired on back with tiny pieces of archival tape and of no visual consequence, someone long ago did a neat white paper repair on back along bottom edge which is all but invisible from the front[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] Text on verso as issued. The printed area remains visually pleasing. A nice impression of an interesting image. Any minor defects along ... morethe sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photo. Sheet measures c. 16 1/2" H x 11 1/8" W. Engraved area measures c. 13 1/2" H x 9 3/8" W. 24495] Any defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos. note: All old sheets of printed paper possibly have short edge splits. Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. Please look carefully and make your decision knowing this antique image is nice. But it is not in perfect"like new" condition. However, with whatever flaws it possesses, it remains entirely worthy of ownership and inclusion in any related collection. We feel it will prove very pleasing to its new owner. We stand behind everything we sell. Everything we offer is guarante

This beautiful coin: 1802 Carlos lV 4M Grade A+ 31-32 about 25mm size. Spectacular coin. This is a true piece of important American History. St. Augustine Fl. is the site of the first permanent settlement in what is now the United States. It was founded in 1565 and will soon be 500 years old. Florida was therefore a Spanish Colony from 1565 to 1821 when it became a Territory of the United States and in 1845 became a State. The British posessed Florida for a 20 year period 1764-1784 and it then once again became Spanish Territory until 1821 when it went to the US. Historically. Florida and St. Augustine were instrumental in the development of the United States and remain important today for many important reasons. You are encouraged to research Florida and St. Augustine on the internet and in libraries for an insight into the fascinating and ... morevibrant contributions of this winderful historic place to our nation. You should note that in our countrys' early days. Cash money was in short supply throughout all of North America, the American Colonies and the developing West. Those places trusted the value of Spanish coinage so much that Spanish money became the official accepted standard of the United States until the 1850s' when the US could manufacture enough of its' own coinage. Spanish coins were commonly used throughout North America as everyday money. The present United States money system and denominations were developed directly from the Spanish system that served us so well for so long. Medieval Lives: Eight Charismatic Men and Women of the Middle Ages by Norman F. Cantor. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 197 pages. Publisher: Harper Collins Publishers; 1994) ISBN: 0060169893. In his new book Norman F. Cantor. The brilliant author of"Inventing the Middle Ages" and"The Civilization of the Middle Ages" profiles eight men and women who are both representative figures of the Middle Ages and led extraordinary lives. Among them are Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, often called the founder of the Middle Ages and author of the first modern autobiography; Cardinal Humbert of Lorraine, the chief political theorist of the medieval papacy; and Robert Grosseteste, the founder of experimental science and the Franciscan opponent of Thomas Aquinas. Of the women Cantor profiles, Helena Augusta, the mother of fourth-century ... moreRoman emperor Constantine, played a significant role in the formation of medieval religious culture. Hildegard of Bingen was a Benedictine abbess who developed a form of personal visionary mysticism and feminist theory. The third of Cantor's principal women subjects. Eleanor of Aquitaine, was the most famous of medieval queens and had an enormous influence both on politics and society and the arts and literature of her time. Norman F. Cantor's approach to these profiles is almost novelistic: he has invented conversations, based closely on a century of medieval scholarship and on the original sources, which thrust the reader immediately into the lives of his subjects, their colleagues, and friends, and give an immediacy to medieval life rarely encountered in conventional biography. Cantor makes not only comprehensible but exciting to the reader the crises and crosscurrents of medieval cultural history. In a manner rarely achieved. He gets the reader inside the psyche of medieval women and men and makes us fully empathize with their aspirations, triumphs, anxieties, and disappointments.
