Hello dear friends. Up for auction today ~ antique circa 1850-80 Russian orthodox holly icon of St. Demetrius of Thessalonica(Dimitri of Salonika) Hand painted on solid wood. The Saint Demetrius on this icon depicted in iconography stile from 10th century, type as Infantry Soldier armored with spear and sword and dress with blue armor with lion head on arm. Beautiful figure of the St. Demetrius in gold ornaments around real masterpiece. Tempera paint on levkas(gesso) with gold floral vignettes engraved and embossed. The icon can easily be dated no earlier than the later years of the 19th century. Before that time, the geometrical and rounded-top border, incised and painted in imitation of cloisonné, was not used, as can be said also of the heavily-incised and gilt decoration of the rest of the image; and of course the manner in which ... morethe figure itself is painted indicates the same period. This is the most unusual piece I have ever owned. I bought this at the Brimfield Antique show years ago. The man selling it said it came from a family who moved here from Greece. When in Greece. Their relative(grandfather, great grandfather? used this girth on his donkey while plowing the field. The icons on it were to bless and protect the donkey, to ask God to keep the donkey from any harm. I have never seen another, but maybe you have? I am not sure of it's value. HAND MADE SLOVENIA PLAQUE OF ST GEORGE AND THE DRAGON This is a beautiful reproduction of a late 15th century icon in excellent condition. It measures approximately 11 inches by 7-3/4 inches on a 1 inch board. It depicts St George slaying the dragon. An allegory for the triumph of the good and godly over the evil and satanic. In the traditional legend, St George freed a Libyan city from a dragon that had been tormenting its citizens. The dragon could only be appeased by bringing it sacrifices and, not knowing what to do next, the king and queen were resigned to sacrificing their daughter Elizabeth. At the last moment, the young George appeared on a white steed and slay the dragon.

There appears to be some restoration to the horse's hindquarters. Painted egg tempera. Gold leaf and gesso on board. Overlaid with a silver repoussé and engraved riza, repeating the image of the napkin shown on the painted surface. At present time decorated eggs are made of wood and then painted with different topics. Of crystal and glass materials then enraved and painted with gold paints, of metal, stones, porcelain. Antique Orthodox Icon 18th/19th c St. Kyriake (Domnica) the Great Virgin Martyr
Antique hand painted Orthodox Icon I know this came from Turkey near the Black sea north of Istanbul. The listing before was of St Barbara but have found out it is in fact. St. Kyriake(Domnica) the Great Virgin Martyr of Nicomedia"Saint Kyriake was the only child of Dorotheus and Eusebia. Since she was born on a Sunday(Kyriake. In Greek) she was named Kyriake. One day a wealthy magistrate wished to betroth Kyriake to his son. Not only was she young and beautiful. But her parents were wealthy, and the magistrate wished to control that wealth. The magistrate went to her parents to request her hand, but St Kyriake told him that she wished to remain a virgin, for she had dedicated herself to Christ. The magistrate was angered by her words. So he went to the emperor Diocletian to denounce the saint and her parents as Christians who mocked ... morethe idols, and refused to offer sacrifice to them. Diocletian sent soldiers to arrest the family and have them brought before him. He asked them why they would not honor the gods which he himself honored. They told him that these were false gods. And that Christ was the one true God. Dorotheus was beaten until the soldiers grew tired and were unable to continue. Since neither flattery nor torment had any effect. Diocletian sent Dorotheus and Eusebia to Melitene on the eastern border between Cappadocia and Armenia. Then he sent St Kyriake to be interrogated by his son-in-law and co-ruler Maximian at Nicomedia. Maximian urged her not to throw her life away. Promising her wealth and marriage to one of Diocletian's relatives if she would worship the pagan gods. St Kyriake replied that she would never renounce Christ, nor did she desire worldly riches. Enraged by her bold answer, Maximian had her flogged. The soldiers who administered this punishment became tired, and had to be replaced three times. Shamed by his failure to overcome a young woman. Maximian sent St Kyriake to Hilarion, the eparch of Bithynia, at Chalcedon. He told Hilarion to either convert Kyriake to paganism, or
