SUPERB ANTIQUE EMBROIDERED PANEL of SILVER METALLIC THREAD ~3 dimensional The most amazing antique embroidered panel of raised silver embroidery. This is sewn over wooden forms to give a real 3-dimensional effect. I'm afraid I don't know where it originated but it is quite early. At least 18th century I believe. As you can see from the pictures it is quite time-worn& tarnished. At some point it has been either rolled or folded, leading to breaks in the wooden forms, which is a pity. When it is hung straight, the breaks are not quite so obvious. I think the background would originally have been silvery too. Having said all that, it really is still very beautiful. The back is lined with natural linen which is quite discoloured. It is still sound with no fabric rot& would be suitable for display by hanging on a wall. It measures ... moreapprox. 44" x 10 1/2" or 112cm x 27cm. Please look carefully at the pictures as they show the condition better than I can describe. Wonderful and rare 18th century embroidered panel. Likely dates from the mid to late 1700's. Maybe even earlier. Possibly a lid from a sewing box or similar item. Found in a box of junk at an estate auction recently. Measures 9 3/8" x 9 3/4" Silk embroidery and metallic embroidery. Possibly gold and silver threads, on oyster colored woven silk taffeta, dupioni or similar fabric background. Looks like English/Continental or Early American. Condition: Obvious wear includes some old water stains. Slits and some deterioration of the darkened(aged with time) background silk fabric. The embroidery is in good shape. All mounted on a board of some sort- backing is waxed pink silk fabric and bound on all edges with a gold brocade fabric. This is a chiffon dress with lame threads in floral and abstract designs. The sleeves are flared. With a chiffon hem, there are two fabric flowers on the front. With a roomy shape, flaring out towards the hem, with a kind of early, cut on the bias shaping. There is shirring at the top of the shoulders, straps inside with snaps to hold on to a hanger. It's unlined except for the sleeves. There is a narrow hem. It measures 39 1/2" around at the but, 37" at the waist. Its 48" long in back, 14" between the shoulder seams in back, with an 8 5/8" bare area, as you see it on the mannequin. In good condition overall. With a small area of tarnish at the center bust which you can see in the picture. There is a 1/4" x 1/8" hole in the mid section. There is one 1/8" tear, it looks as if it could be brought ... moreback together and sewn, no fabric seems to be missing. There is a 1" x 1/4" area with some brownish spots, one or two other small spots. There is some fading at the underarms. It seems fairly strong and wearable, with care, of course. C.1920. The skein came in a bundle of 12 which had the label wrapped around the group as shown in the first picture. It is a fine 3 ply thread which has a nice weight to it. I estimate that it is approximately 5 yards in length. I am told that this thread is also used for fly tying fishing lures. The color is just stunning! This listing is for an Antique c.1890 Chinese tapestry. Made from white gold and silk threads, utilizing GLYPHS(symbolic writing) CHEVRONS, Arrows and Diamonds. The glyph symbols are Chevrons. Arrows and triple diamond formations. Chevrons are symbolic of shields. Which offer protection against the arrows(adversity) As Shakespeare would have called it: the slings and arrows of outrageous Fortune" The chevrons and shafts of the arrows are stitched in white gold metallic threads(wealth& strength) while the arrow heads are silk threads(inferior to metal shields) If you look closely at the triple diamond formations. You will see the center diamonds situated between the two chevrons, acting as shields of protection. The diamonds may represent wealth. However the triple diamond formation may represent the dimensions of body. Mind and spirit. ... moreI included photos of the tapestry in the upright position and horizontally.
