Item, Heligoland Great Britain Germany Lot of 5 Shilling values Stamps Reprints? Condition, Some are hinged and one of the two 1/2 schilling has a tear in the middle. Please see photographs History, My wife has tried to determine if any of these are originals or reprints without really knowing the differences. What she found on the internet is: Stamps were issued for"Heligoland" from 1867 through 1890 under a rather complex arrangement between the British and the Germans. The postal administration was tied to Hamburg(and to Germany after the unification in 1872) and the stamps were printed by the Prussian printing office(which became the Reich Druckerei after unification) for a German speaking populace and yet the stamps bore the profile of Queen Victoria. In 1890 the British conveyed the island to Germany in exchange for a bit ... moreof African territory. The island came under the Reich postal administration and began to use the stamps of Germany. Thus Heligoland stamps became the past issues of a"dead territory" and very collectable. There were more than twenty reprintings of the stamps for collectors in the nineteenth century. Some of them official, some semi-official, and some purely private. For complicated reasons, it would be fair to say that very few of the reprintings were actually"forgeries. A million and a third valid stamps were printed for use, but only perhaps half of them were ever used. The rest were bought for resale to collectors. Then there were between five and seven million reprints, the number depending on which source you rely on. My father encouraged me to collect stamps. I didn't collect stamps on the basis of'quality' but rather than'it filled a slot' in the book. Friends and other family members would provide stamps/envelopes as well. The best was when I spent a summer with my grandmother. Her neighbor had a chicken coop. Not used for chickens, but storage. She told my grandmother I could have anything in the coop I wanted. I found a bunch of stamps
