Speed's atlas consisted of sixty-seven maps- complemented by descriptive and informative text- of all the counties and regions of England, Wales, Scotland, and ireland. he acknowledged that the maps were based on the work of earlier surveyors, but his atlas offered a totality that no contemporaneous cartographer had accomplished. In addition, Speed's atlas was notable because each map included a plan of the most important town in the county; in many cases Speed's were the first maps of those towns ever printed. Whether Speed drew them himself we do not know: for one man to visit and map sixty or more towns scattered from Penzance to berwick and from Canterbury to Carlisle would have been a monumental undertaking in Stuart-era England It is more likely that he commissioned the maps from local surveyors. It is based on Bartholomew maps and is an early example of relief shading using the hypsometric tint technique. There is an index page and 27 separate sections together with 4 touring sections-London and it's Environs. The English Lake District, The Shakespeare Country and North Wales, Snowdon District. There are also fascinating Dunlop products advertisements. Very Rare Advertising Map Plate for "au Paradis des Touristes" on Isle of Jersey
This is a very rare advertising or souvenir plate from au Paradis des Touristes. A famous store located at 63 King Street on the Isle of Jersey in the English Chanel. The store was a major tourist spot at the turn of the last century(1900) We had never seen one of these plates before, but a search of the Internet revealed that a prominent London map dealer has one for sale at £520 which translates to a bit more than $780 at current exchange rates. We are also showing in the accompaning illustrations a print advertisement for the store. It must have been a very important tourist site because a period book of photographs of the area has a picture of it on the cover. The plate is 8⅛ inches in diameter and is in very good condition. There is a number 5 impressed on the back and under that another mark which may be a 6. Next to which is a ... moresmaller impression I cannot make out at all. At the edge of the back under he rim is a small defect in the glazing which I believe was in the making. We have shown a close-up of this area in the last photograph. We realize there may be interest in this item in the United Kingdom so we have listed the international postage which unfortunately has risen sharpy in the past year. Rare Vintage ‘Quiet-Way Motoring Maps’, By Price’s Motorine Oil, 1930s
Here on offer is a rare vintage‘Quiet-Way Motoring Maps’ By Price’s Motorine Oil, dating to the 1930s or possibly the 1940s. The whole set is presented in a double-sided wallet that is made from waxed dark green cloth covered boards with dull gold embossed title and illustration on the front. When opened the left hand side has a transparent green cover. Behind this are twelve numbered maps of England and southern Scotland, up as far as Alloa and Anstruther. The maps are all in superb condition. On the right-hand side behind a clear coverare eleven route cards with a total of 25‘Quiet-Way’ routes described and which are highlighted on the companion maps. The maps are also in excellent condition. Apart from some minor surface marks to the outer cover, there is very little evidence of use. The map set is offered in good vintage condition.
