This is a well-used and loved. And cared for, Virgin Mary with the Immaculate Heart, it is ChalkWare or Plaster and is hand painted in what I would say is"Tempra" but I am not an artist, wonderful detale in the eyes, the heart with its flame was gold and red but touching it as part of a religious ritual has worn away a lot of it. This has an interesting story. It is basically a"santos" saint) that came out of a New Mexico home. It was in a niche(a place in the wall where you can put statues in the hall or room) It looks like they put this in long after it was painted, it was purchased directly out of the niche) as to make it fit the shallow frame of the niche, they cut off part of the front and part of the back of the base round support and painted it with something different bu tried to match the blue. I have absolutely ... moreno idea why the silver leafe is at her feet, it had to be a family reason, I can tell it was added AFTER the green paint as one part of the leaf is loose. Of course there are some chips and worn spots but this lady has survived a very long time. I do know the"199" on the back is some kind of a mold mark but I know nothing else about it. Vintage Religious Fragment - Chalkware Plaster Head of Jesus Christ Relief
I purchased this chalk ware relief at an antique auction in historic Georgetown. South Carolina. Aside for the areas where he is chipped, it is really beautifully done. I believe there was originally a hook on the back of the piece, but it is no longer there. I have photographed all the damage to the piece. I believe the missing paint ads character. The piece measures about 6" wide by 9.5.
