Vignaud Limoges large rose powder box 8" hand painted with gold accents 1910's
I have for auction this evening a very fine example of Limoges porcelain by the makers and design studios of Vignaud Limoges in France. This massive 8" powder box is impressive and makes for an incredible display piece. The cover is skillfully hand painted by an master artist and is lavishly decorated with beautiful roses in reds. Pinks and yellows and are accompanied by foliage in greens with red accents and are rendered as real roses and foliage appear in actual life. There are stems and thorns as well. The roses are painted on a backdrop of variegated colors from mint green to pale pink. The bottom half of the box is painted with gold gilt in scroll fashion. The rims and base of the piece are thickly gilded as well. This is a gorgeous piece and would make an elegant addition to any Limoges collection. Item dimensions and dating: All ... moremeasurements are approximate. This piece measures 8" in diameter at its broadest point and stands around 4" tall. This piece dates from the early twentieth century by the marks and the design elements. Condition report: This piece is in very nice antique/vintage condition with one large chip on the outside rim of the bottom half and has been painted over long ago in gold gilt that is darkened with age. There is a sliver out of the inside rim and a couple of nicks out of the foot rim but nothing that detracts from the piece. There are no other chips. Cracks or crazing and despite the large chip out of the bottom rim"you can turn it away to display" the show quality of this piece is fantastic and you will love the way it displays in your favorite cabinet or on display on your dresser or favorite occassional table. There are no tags or lineage to identify this piece. But it does seem a little old. The top edge of the piece is quite dusty and needs cleaning. The red felt on the back side also looks old. I have only noticed 2 flaws in this piece. There is a small piece of the edge that was chipped off at about the 9 o'clock position. Also, the gold paint seems to be a little rubbed off at the 9 o'clock position. I am not an ... moreantiquities expert. Wow.my pictures do not do this piece justice. A wonderful 12 inch long celery bown by 6 3/4 inches wide and a bit less than 2 inches tall at the top of the handle. Large fully opened roses around the sides and in between each of these are smaller red roses.all of the roses accented with green leaves and gold accents in beaded and backgrounds. In this same rose area you will see an intricate design in the background.a rather maze like design in gold.all on the white background color. The center bottom of the bowl is an oval cartouche with two fully opened roses with leaves on a gold background.again with a gold beaded border. On the flat bottom area is a gold scroll design in the form of leaves and stems.in this same area you will see a grouping of yellow roses going all the way around this area. The border area I just love.has the gold background ... morecolor with designs of both green and a dark dark red color. Two cut out handles definitely cap off this lovely piece. This gorgeous Ginger Jar was acquired at an estate sale here in Las Vegas. It might be handpainted as you can feel the texture of the paint when you rub your hand over the surface. The gold bordering is exquisite and very detailed as you can see by the photos. The flowers. Leaves and birds have depth as you can see by the 2nd picture. The underside reads"JAPAN" We do not know its age or history only that it is beautifully done. It stands about 8" tall to the top of the lid and at its widest area is approximately 4 3/4" across.
