It is not immediately noticed when looking at the box with the lid in place, but more apparent from the inside. The inside of both the lid and base are decorated as amazingly as the top and outside border. The box is 1 1/2" tall with a diameter of 3 7/8" It is marked as shown in the photos. No wear to the enameling or gilt. A very fine piece of early Meiji Satsuma which can be professionally repaired to restore it to original condition without altering the original enamel and painting. Every piece is a small piece of art, really amazing! A lot of what is sold as"handpainted" is actually transferware with handpainted details. This is NOT the case with this set. I have examined carefully with magnifying loupe and each and every one is ENTIRELY HAND PAINTED. The porcelain of the cups and saucers is eggshell thin. The serving pieces somewhat thicker and heavier. The teapot is 5 3/4" tall overall, saucers are 4 1/2" cups are 2 1/4" tall. Lastly, one of the teacups has a special surprise- a very fine quality lithophane of a geisha, which you can see when held up to the light. This set is all hand signed with kanji script(shown in photos) no English or export marks. Sorry I cannot identify the maker. I think this dates from the early 1900s. This finely painted. Beautiful and charming set is much better in real life than in my photos! p.s. I will be packaging this very, very carefully and doubleboxing for safe delivery!

The intricate imagery and attention to detail is nothing short of spectacular, with a dazzling array haloed figures set amongst a beautiful landscape, and shading rendered by thousands of minute, golden pinpoint sized dots. The edge of the dish is precisely banded round with elegant, intricate patterning, and the entire piece is further highlighted by stunning raised gilding, completing the piece in refined style. Both vases are(apx) 6 1/2" tall- one is slightly shorter than the other.it is closer to 6 1/4" The width at the shoulders of each vase is apx 3 1/2" wide. Both vases have similar decorations: cobalt blue lizards attacking a large spider. The lizards are both embossed onto the vase in a beautiful. Raised- 3 dimensional fashion, and they have golden colored highlights on their spine, legs and rib-cage(back of body) The spider is cobalt, but flat on the vase- not raised- but it too has golden highlights on its legs. The shorter vase has more pronounced golden highlights. While the slightly taller vase's golden highlights are somewhat faded. The taller vase has a slight depression at the rim of the neck(Pix 7)it is glazed and most likely created at the time of the vase's creation. These vases are not signed on their bottoms. They have identical coloring. But since each was hand painted they are different, except for the'Lizards attacking the Spider' theme of the vases. Workingmen, and ill children– holds a fish under his arm. Benten– the goddesss of music, arts, beauty, and water– plays a biwa lute. Both Ebisu and Benten are one of the Seven Gods of Fortune in Japanese folklore. The Ebisu shaker measures about 2 3/4” high. And Benten measures about 2 1/2” high. Ebisu has a chip just above his forehead. Both shakers have some wear to the enamel and gilt. There are no stoppers.

This auction is for a wonderful vintage pair of 3.25" tall Japanese porcelain/ceramic kokeshi doll salt and pepper shakers from the post World War 2. Mid century era. The female shaker is wearing an orangey/red Haori coat(my pictures make the red color brighter than it actually is) over her green and white horizontal striped kimono. She's also wearing a red and blue obi. And a red and white hair adornment, as well as a red kanzashi next to her top knot. The male shaker is wearing a blue Haori coat over his green and white horizontally striped kimono, as well as a blue and red obi. Both shakers have 5 holes/openings, and they both have their cork stoppers. There are Japanese characters in red ink on the bottom of each one. So cute! This pair of kokeshi doll ceramic salt and pepper shakers is in good vintage condition- hard to find ... moremany flaws- and they would make a great addition to your growing collection. There are no chips or cracks. White areas are camera glare. Please remember that this is a vintage shaker set that may have minor imperfections.
