RARE 19THc Mother of Pearl Silver ROSARY BIG Beads Carved Cross LOT AS FOUND
I acquired several religious items- rosaries. Medals, etc. out of a local estate a few months ago. I will be listing them over the next month. This interesting lot is being sold as I found it- all pieces were in a box marked mother of pearl rosaries. Please read the description carefully. High bidder will get everything shown- there is an INCOMPLETE heavy 37 1/2" long Victorian MOP rosary(also called a French or Colonial rosary) with round beads ranging from 10mm-11mm. The beads are encased in silver filigree- I have not tested the purity of the metal. It could very well be sterling silver- all links are soldered shut. The 5 bead strand(antiphon beads)coming down from the medallion is missing, as is the cross. High bidder also gets 2 carved MOP Crosses- 1 large measuring3" X 1 3/4" and one small cross that is 1 1/4" long. ... moreFinally, there are 2 more mop rosaries- both from the 1920s and complete. One, which is marked Jerusalem on the back of the cross, measures 19 1/2" long, has barrel-shaped beads and a cross that is metal and plastic. The other is 17 3/4" long, with no marks on the back of the heart-shaped medal or cross. CONDITION- no chipped or cracked beads, crosses are intact with no cracks or chipped edges. Metal crosses have tarnish and discoloration. Beads look dirty in my photos- they are not- they really glow when the light hits them. Overall, condition is excellent! Very nice set of Rosary beads all made from Mother of Pearl and the cross is also mother of pearl with a sterling corpus. from about 1880-1900. The central joint is silver and the corpus too I believe(as these were probably made in France or Italy european white metal about.835 silver) an d a very fine thing in it's own right. Very finely made top quality with extra large beads with every decade joint extra big. A nice clean set too. In good condition. Hanging from hand they measure 17 inches long so a very good size. Nothing missing. All beads present and in lovely condition. Bought at a local auction from the contents of a Convent here in Ireland. Hand-cut mother-of-pearl beads and nickel silver metalwork. 52 beads, approx. length of 18 1/2 inches. Seven groups of 7 mother-of-pearl Hail Mary beads(6mm) with 3 additional beads and a crucifix. Between each group of beads is a nickel silver medal picturing at obverse the Virgin Mary with seven swords piercing her Heart. Reverse sides depict the appropriate scenes for each Seven Sorrow. A nickel silver crucifix with fine Corpus is attached at the end of the drop. The 7 groups of 7 Hail Mary beads are recited in remembrance of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. The other rosary has round pearl looking beads(a few are a little larger than the rest) with links, an oval-shaped medal of Jesus carrying the cross(about 3/4" and a gold colored brassy metal crucifix(about 1 3/4" long) If you were to stretch these rosaries out, they would measure about 13" long or so from end to end but not including the crosses.
