This beautiful and substantial silver capped cranberry scent bottle is in excellent condition with only two pin nicks to two of the edges on the faceted body; these are so tiny that just I can’t photograph them accurately. They can be just about felt with the finger tip. I mention them for accuracy. After over 140 years. The scent bottle is in excellent antique condition. The bottle has two finely engraved silver lids or end caps. Both with a‘snap’ spring button opening mechanism which means that the caps fit snugly and tightly and there is no glass stopper fitted or required. The caps are not hallmarked(as they were often not in this period) but they have been professionally tested and are definitely made of silver. They have no dents or damage. The spring mechanism works perfectly. Inside each lid. Behind a tiny glass lining, the bottle ... moreis marked with the name of the famous maker“S Maw& Son London” This maker traded at Aldersgate, London and used this form of title from 1860 to 1870 to 75. It traded under variants of this title thereafter) This bottle therefore was probably made about 1870. The bottle is made of rich thick dark ruby or cranberry glass and the body is faceted in 9 segments with a bevelled panel at the top and at the bottom. It is comparatively heavy. Weighing 159gms before packing and was, and is, clearly a high quality item. I have provided plenty of photographs which form part of the description. It so reminded me of the one my mom used to pray before Mass-with the beautiful faceted crystals that spray rays of color when reflected by the high church ceiling lights. I remember being mesmerized by it when I was a child. But enough nostalgia. This is a unique rosary in that the beads are not the typical round faceted beads-they are multi-faceted. And sort of triangular or pear-shaped measuring 8.89 mm at the top. AND.they are NOT just cut glass-they are rock crystal, a form of natural quartz, as tested on the Presidium gem tester. The round Mystery beads are double-capped in sterling filigree. The link chain is sterling silver. As are the crucifix ... moreand the centerpiece medallion. Both the cross and the medallion are marked sterling, and the cross also bears a maker's mark. The rosary is inscribed with the owner's name. And the date of 1950-possibly it was a gift some 64 years ago.
