A high quality ancient Gandharan schist-stone frieze. Dating to approximately 200 A.D. This beautiful piece is a fine example of the Gandharan Sculptural style that flourished in areas of modern day India. Pakistan and Afghanistan during the first to third centuries A.D. In this frieze the Buddha is depicted in a series of enclosures, framed by arches and shown in a state of meditation. Schist sculptures such as this would have been used to embellish the upper part of a stupa containing Buddhist relics. Though some panels were used to reflect a narrative cycle, this is not the case with this item. Rather these images were used to convey the meaning of the stupa, and to indicate its radiating power to all who surrounded it. This is a relatively early example of the Buddha depicted in human form. Indeed statues and reliefs of the Buddha were ... morenot made until the 1st century A.D. The shelf measures 66.25 inches wide and the frieze is 50.25 inches wide. The frieze is 11.5 inches tall. The shelf is 12 deep. It is very heavy. Here is what I know about this piece: I originally purchased this item from an antique shop in San Jose California sometime in the Mid-1980’s. The shop owner said it was recovered from a theater in San Francisco that was being torn down or renovated. I don’t remember which, or the name of the theater, should have written it down I guess. The shop owner though it was probably circa 1920’s or 30’s. This is second hand info so you can take it or leave it… The plaque measures about 46-inches wide. 21-inches tall, and about 3-inches at the thickest point. It weighs approximately 35-Lbs and is in great condition without any cracks, chips, or repairs. C. 1880 This fantastic Sheffield plate flagon was made in London by the well-known silver company of Hukin and Heath. The flagon has a hinged lid with a raised. Geometric, oval lozenge band at the edge, framed top and bottom with a polished silver lip and platform. The lid is topped with a finial of a wine-imbibing putti seated on a pile of grapes and leaves, with one arm resting around the neck of a female lion. The lid connects to a curvilinear. Three-dimensional handle decorated on ... moreeither side with geometric bands of raised dots and brushed trapezoidal indentations. The centre of the handle is covered with a raised, cascading spray of laurel leaves. The raised top of the spray forms a useful thumb on the handle. The handle is joined to the top of the flagon at the back. In the centre of a wide band of chased silver, decorated with a beautiful, raised garland of grapes, vines and leaves. The garlanded band covers the top third of the flagon on either side of a triangular pour spout in the form of a laughing, crowned Dionisyian head. Below that. A large repousse figural Grecian frieze covers the lower two-thirds of the flagon with nymphs, satyrs, putti and monkeys frolicking beneath a grape arbour in the wood as they enjoy music, dancing, amorous embraces and the fruits of the vine. There is one woman near the handle who seems half-human/half-monkey. Nursing two monkey like babies, a nod to Darwin, who had famously and controversially published"On The Origins of Species" in 1859. 5 VINTAGE BRITISH MUSEUM REPLICA PLAQUES OF PARTHENON FRIEZE BY JOHN HENNING
Miniature copies of the famous sculptures from the Parthenon were made by John Henning(1771-1851) Who came to London from Paisley in Scotland in 1811. Henning was struck by the beauty of the sculptures from the Parthenon frieze and asked for permission to draw and model them. Henning carved versions in slate as sunken impressions, from which raised versions were then cast in white plaster. He reproduced the frieze in sections measuring five cm(two inches) by 15 cm(six inches) These were sold in boxed sets. The entire frieze measured 24 feet long. I am listing five panels of the Parthenon frieze. Which are British Museum replicas and, I believe, are made from resin. Each one has a felt backing with notes on what each panel represents. Four of the panels measure 22.5cms long by 5.75cms wide and 1cm deep. The fifth panel measures 19cms long ... moreby 5.75cms wide and 1cm deep. I know that the British Museum still sells replicas of the frieze but these panels are by no means modern. As they have some age discoloration. I'm afraid that I don't know how old they actually are. They are quite heavy and weigh a total of 1.25 kilos unpackaged.

Standing 5” in height. This lidded pot measures about 4” in diameter. The middle section is comprised of a blue textured glaze, with an orange peel effect. Atop this band is raised circles, dots and flowers. A shiny cobalt band is present on the shoulders of the pot, and the lid’s finial, adding a nice contrast. Gold highlights are present on the body of the antique piece and trim the cobalt band. Impressed markings found on the underside are“PATENT No. 8687 REG 497199 ENGLAND” In looking up the registration number, it dates the Lovatts pot from 1907 through 1908. With regards to condition. Beautiful rustic and ancient cast wall relief of Daphne and Apollo as seen in Greco/Roman mythology. This terra coat plate is a reproduction in neo classical design. The art work is dramatic and it has a patina feel that seems two thousand years old. The edges are corrugated and it appears like part of a stone frieze wall sculpture. It has a hang wire on the back. A sturdy piece that adds a roman classical touch to your decor. Great as collector's piece or as a gift. It's smaller size makes easy to place. A Pair of Copper embossed Electrotypes of the Elgin Marbles or Parthenon Friezes. They are Lead lined on the back and are signed and dated 1819(John Henning 1771-1851) Each double Plaque is 9.25 inches long and 5.5 inches wide.and you are buying the pair of double frieze plaques. Please see the pictures for condition and details.and if you require more please let me know. The plaques are in good general condition.With a rich deep patina. There are no splits or tears in the copper fronts. There are a few minor scratches.Spots of tarnishing some green verdigris type staining in a small areas,and a few minor dents here and there.all commensurate with age. The back of each piece is lead lined and is in good and complete condition on one of the plaques.however the other plaque is missing its lead in one corner(See pics) and there is some splitting ... moreof the lead on the central line along the length.but it could be restored.And has not affected the front at all. One of the corners on the left front of one of the panels is slightly misshapen. They are being sold untouched and uncleaned.This is up to the buyer.And, how they would like them to be finished for display.
