On the frontier with the Republic of Congo, the Kota People comprise a number of small tribes such as the Mahongwe, the Sango, the Obamba and the Shamaye, who all pratise similar ceremonies. It is thought they migrated southwards during the 18th century and settled in the upper valley of the Ogooue River, in a forest environment. Their main resources come mostly from hunting and agriculture. Historically, the Kota left their dead unburied in the forest, far from the village. Under the influence of neighboring tribes, they then began to bury their dead. Chiefs were always buried, but often their bones, especially their skull were later exhumed and placed with magical objects in a bark box or a basket called a Bwete, in which a carved figure was inserted. A custom base is included with this piece. It is important to properly exhibit a beautiful piece of art. The splendor of the piece cannot be fully revealed without a correct display. Custom bases can cost a minimum of thirty and up to several hundred dollars depending on its complexity and size. It is very difficult to locate a good stand

code: ZS a wonderful ensemble of a carved African wooden figure and bark box with lid. A Byeri reliquary Box with Guardian from the Fang People. In Gabon ... moreor Cameroon, Africa height: circa 56 cm/ circa 22 inch age unknown. But judging the figures feel and patina we think it is made circa 1900 the Fang preserved ancestral skulls and bones in cylindrical containers with wooden figures. With the feet dangling over the edge, symbolically evoking the ancestor and guarding the relics. the projecting stem of the figure and fixed knee pose. Allow the figure to be set atop the cylindrical, hollow container this guardian figure is presenting an offertory cup. Supported by both hands this figure has metal discs set in place for the eyes. A pronounced navel with metal bands and a nail, carved ankle rings, metal bracelets, a necklace of white beads, on the front top of the high coiffure 3 nails, at the back where the hair splits in two, again 4 nails, on the median edge on the top of the coiffure 4 or 5 nails are missing the wood of the figure has some old damages and old holes(see the 10 pictures) But is firm and solid, it has a smooth feel and authentic patina the box is made of bark. Wood, twined fibres and nails, it is very solid, the bottom has some old termite traces, it seems complete to us, only the long twain is half loose weight: circa 1930 gram the height of the figure. Including stem: circa 38 cm/ circa 15 inch we are no experts on the subject of tribal art. We have done some research, trying to attribute this statue to a land, country, tribe or people, to the best we could- do judge for yourself the tribal affilation and the correct age- we are selling this item"as is" and we will not accept returns if the buyer finds that we are wrong concerning these matters. returnpolicy: please do read our full returnpolicy on the special page in our Ebay-store shipping: you will be ordering shipment provided by PostNL from The Netherlands- this will be according to the PostNL conditions and destinations- only with

A very interesting. Valuable and highly collectible Authentic Male Fang Reliquary Guardian Figure. Early 20th Century. Height: 11.6 in. tall. 15 in. with ... morewooden display stand. Such reliquary figures are usually referred to as female or male one to their association with fertility. But most often in the carvings the sex is undefined. The guardians are intended to protect the relics of tribal ancestors and are placed atop the cylindrical bark containers housing the revered ancestral bones. At the'Bwit'ceremonies and divination rituals. The'Eyema Byeri' was coated with palm oil, as evidenced by the black colour. The practice of the'Byeri' ancestral cult was disappeared around the 1900-1910. Byeri statues. Full/half figures& heads, huts and posts(also bark bone containers) were burned wholesale by the well-meaning Christian missionaries and French colonial government in Gabon. During the 1920s the cult never attained the same intensity of artistic greatness there after. Good'Byeri' figures which remain are either those which were hidden or ones collected by Europeans before the destruction. This object represents the very best example of Fang Art I've seen in the last 10 years on Ebay. And such quality is seldom offered outside of the"high-end-market" Quite possibly it is the only authentic Fang guardian you will ever seen on Ebay. Beautifully carved classic features with a high degree of stylization characterize this sensitive sculpture. The standing male figure is presenting an offertory horn. Supported by both hands. Flat metal discs are set in place for his eyes. An absolutely fascinating piece! INTERNATIONAL BIDDERS WELCOME Please contact me for shipping rates
