True Cross Relic Reliquary set in Baroque circa 1690-1710 Silver Case
The Most Holy Wood of the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ set in an antique Baroque Sterling Silver Case with rare glass back. The case being circa 1690-1710. The wax seal and tamper proof threads are unbroken and present. There are two splinters of the cross set in a larger gold thread cross. The cross is surrounded by gold threads woven into a pattern to fill the case on hand woven red cloth which serves as the overall background. The cross wood is set on a very fine hand woven white textile. Likely linen. The overall red background textile has faded over time as the cross relic was placed in the case and sealed over 300 years ago. The cross is set on a gold thread embroidered hill. Most likely this piece was worn often at some time during history as the case design and top findings are for a chain. Another indication of this being worn ... moreis the rare glass backing so that the seal is visible at all times whenever it would be turned over. The sterling silver case measures 2 5/8” inches high by 1 5/16” inches wide. The silver is fully tested and is.925 Sterling. The silver has a fine old patina that comes from age. The case was lightly cleaned to maintain its distinct look. The glass is hand cut and hand beveled at the edge. The front glass is in great condition. The back side glass has stress cracks in it. The glass is still solid and well though it has the cracks. Fine piece for gentle wearing or for an altar. I have owned with piece for over 20 years and it has given me great comfort. The owner before me acquired it I believe in the late 1940’s or early 1950’s. I got it as the center piece of a well loved collection of other relics from his estate.
