Hi. Here is another beautiful multi reliquary from the estate of a French Archbishop who had a huge relic collection. This relic contains 2 importand relics: EX VELO BVM- The Veil of Blessed Virgin Mary-OSS S. ANT PAT- Oss relic of Saint Anthony Padua also called Patova The reliquary itself is fire gilded with 24K gold. This was a process done mainly in France where the base metal was heated up then gilded with a mixture of pure gold and mercury. The mercury would evaporate. Leaving a rich gold gilding. This was a dangerous process for the guilders, as they usually ended up with mercury poisoning. Don't worry, the mercury is all gone, and this is safe to wear. From the style of this reliquary. I would date it to around the 1870's. It measures 2 1/2" x 1 1/8" and about 3/4" thick. On the 3rd day of the exposition, the face of Our Lord on the cloth became clearly visible and appeared to be alive, surrounded by a soft light. The Canons of St. Peter immediately rung the bells, and crowds of people came to watch the 3 hours long manifestation. But I was told, translated, the title is HOLY FACE OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. THE TRUE EFFIGIES. This is framed and has 2 wax seals. Frame has wear. The Holy Face of Jesus from the image of VERONICA'S VEIL. The Veil is kept in in ST.PETERS BASILICA in Rome. This measures roughly 14" x 22" with the frame.
