American Phrenological Journal September. 1847 Vol. 9. No. 9 Published in New York by Fowlers& Wells. A single issue in good condition. Front wrap is loose and tattered along the lower spine(see picture) Back wrap missing. Several articles on the preposterous fake science of phrenology that held vogue for a surprisingly long time. This issue examines a blacksmith, a 105 year old man, and also has a piece on"Fascination" Indian Mesmerism, something along the lines of hypnotism. Pages numbered 265-296. Plus front wrap. The inside of the front wrap has a darkened rectangular area that looks like something used to be tucked inside that caused the discoloration. Otherwise very clean and fresh inside. The Men of Color, a mixed race between creoles and negroes, are, in many of the West Indies, a rapidly increasing people, and would eventually become permanent masters of these islands, but for the numerical superiority of the genuine negroes. Up for bid is this fascinating lot of antique phrenology material. Suitable for display or the medical collector. The book Fowler's Practical Phrenology. Original 1886 edition, complete and intact. Fair condition for its age with wear, pencil marks and foxing, ect as pictured, but still in handsome condition for reading or display. Tight binding, all signatures intact*the Bust is approx 5 1/2 inches high. I am fairly certain it is a modern reproduction. But quite a conversation piece. You will also receive the pictured issue of The Journal of Quackery. Not really a fun read but again. Adds to the tableau. Some water stains on cover as seen. Shipping is FREE in the US!
