A combination of alcohol and opium. This quack medicine was used to ease the discomfort of teething babies(not to mention their parents) although too much“quieting” apparently had tragic consequences when too much was given to infants. I believe this was an English concoction and must have been imported to the Colonies at some point. This is the second of these Quieting Syrup bottles I've had. Is in excellent used condition with no cracks, chips or other defects and is clean and clear.just a great example of late 1800's/early 1900's quack medicine. Bottle is very pale aqua in color and stands 6” tall and is in very good condition with a tiny fleabite on the top lip. The unembossed bottle is corked and empty. Front label is complete and in good condition and states that the liniment contains“3-10 of 1% Opium” The label also list a wide range of ailments treated in both humans and animals(horses and cattle) Also includes about half of the original box in very poor condition. The tin has paper labels on lid and base in good condition with wear and small portions missing along the edges(see photos) The top label lists a wide range of ailments that the salve will heal including ulcers, festers, ingrown toenails and sore nipples. Early patent medicine for Chamberlain’s Colic. Cholera, and Diarrhoea Remedy manufactured by Chamberlain Medicine Co. Des Moines, Iowa. Pale aqua bottle stands 5” tall and is weakly and crudely embossed“Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera, and Diarrhoea Remedy” on the indented back panel. The two indented side panels are also embossed(weakly) one reading“Des Moines, IA, U.S.A. and the other“Chamberlain Med. Co. The bottle is in very good condition with no damage. The bottle is empty with dried content residue. The front has 97% complete original label in good condition with some roughness along the edges and a few tiny pieces missing along the edges. The label lists the ingredients as“48% Alcohol, 10.7% Ether, 19 Minims of Chloroform, and 1.99 Grains of Opium. The label also gives dosage instructions for adults and children as young as age 4. Labeled, Embossed Medicine Bottle, Alcohol, Opium, Complete with Box & Flyer
Early patent medicine bottle with label for S.B. Goff’s Oil Liniment from S.B. Goff& Sons Co. Camden, New Jersey. BIM pale aqua bottle stands 5.75” tall and is embossed“S.B. Goff’s Oil Liniment” on the rear panel and“Camden, N.J. on one side panel. The bottle is free of any damage and the bottle is corked but empty. The front label is about 100% intact and is in very good condition. The label lists the ingredients as“Alcohol 8% and Opium 1 1/3 Grains in one fluid ounce. The label goes on to claim that“This herbal remedy is mild and soothing possesses peculiar healing properties” and contains a long list of ailments treated including piles, frostbite, sore throat, and toothache. The original price was 25 cents and the bottom of the label contains the 1906 Food& Drug Act Guarantee which likely dates this bottle to 1906 to about 1912 ... morebased on the fact that it contained opium but the bottle is blown-in-mold and not machine made. Also included is the original box which is in good condition but does show wear, soiling, and age toning. The top flap is torn off but is included. The box has a great image of the Goff factory in Camden New Jersey as well as lots and lots of claims on all sides. Included inside the box is the original 24-page advertising pamphlet with information on all of the products available from S.B. Goff and Sons. Complete early patent medicine offered with no reserve.
