Vintage Medicine 1899 Vapo-Cresolene Mini Oil Lamp Cure Diphtheria Scarlet Fever
Up for bids we offer an original Vapo-Cresolene quack medicine vaporizer device. Still in the original box. It's from the Victorian era and resembles a miniature oil lamp that's set inside an ornate, cast iron stand. It comes with the original instructions and an extra iron stand that is nearly identical but a little older. The Vapo-Cresolene was used as sort of an early inhaler that utilized the small kerosene lamp to heat up carbolic acid, a germicide, turning it into an anticeptic. The literature and box claimed this device could be used to treat diptheria, spasmodic croup, whooping cough, asthma, scarlet fever, bronchitis, measles, broncho pneumonia and more. In addition, it was claimed that this vaporizer could be used for the respiratory diseases of animals including horses, dogs and fowl. The glass font of the lamp is embossed ... morewith the words: Vapo Cresolene Kerosene" The burner with original wick is in excellent shape. The glass chimney has some flaws(chip-hairline) from past use but the overall condition of this device is very good. All the parts are there. The extra stand/base is in nice shape and has a patent date of Aug. 8'88 while the complete set is marked Aug. 8'99. The box is in very good shape for its age. Although it's missing most of its cover, the graphics are very good and it only has minor wear. The Vapo-Cresolene Vaporizer was marketed and sold between the 1880s and early 1900s. Asthma, bronchitis etc. The base measures approx. 3" in diameter, it stands approx. 6" high. Clear glass oil well with raised printing"Vapo Cresolene" and"Use Keorsene" and incised printing on top rim"Patented Aug 1 85 Aug 8 89" thick milk glass chimney, embossed metal stand& partial box with advertising. Condition: I'm not sure if this is the original chimney as it doesn't fit tightly in the bracket(see pict. 3) however, this is how I found it at an Estate sale and I am selling it as is. There is a chip/flaw on the metal ring at the top of the stand(underneath the top bowl) it could have been done during manufacturing, as it does not interfere with the integrity of the stand, ... morethere is no weakness in the stand and the top bowl remains firmly in place; there are a few fleabite size nicks on the rim of the chimney, no cracks or breaks; oil well has no chips, cracks or breaks; metal shows some age/use wear to the surface finish; and the box shows wear in a missing top, tears on seams& discoloration. Available for your consideration is an Antique Vapo Cresolene Vaporizer Miniature Oil Lamp This is a very early"QUACK MEDICINE" lamp. Which was used with VAPO CRESOLENE. A medicine that was heated up by means of this lamp to vaporize it for use in healing various afflictions of the respiratory system. This lamp consists of the lamp font which held the kerosene for fuel. The milk glass chimney, the gold gilt iron frame which holds everything in place, and the upper tin holder which holds a little pan above the lamp to heat the Cresolene. The lamp font is embossed"VAPO CRESOLENE USE KEROSENE" Underneath the font is embossed"MADE IN USA" The tin holder has inscribed patent dates. August 4 1885" and"August 8 1888" Dimensions: Holder: Approx. 6 1/4" tall X 3 3/4" wide. Lamp: Approx. 4" ... moretall. Overall very good condition for age with no damage found. Some discoloration to the milk glass chimney and the top and bottom rims of the chimney may have some tiny flea bites but not really sure- it could just be rough cut glass.
