In examining the literature it’s likely that the two compartments containing the Nor-Co-Hol product. May have originally held 4 oz. bottles of“ Miracle Massage Lotion” This was a relatively expensive device for the era. With a retail price of $10.00, when new. The device itself consists of 4 hard rubber rollers mounted on a metal and plastic frame. With a center roller which is covered with an absorbent material. It is listed as‘patent pending’ But without an actual patent number it is difficult to date. The best ... moreclue for dating may be the bottles of Nor-Co-Hol. A Norwich Pharmaceutical Company product which was advertised for a relatively short period in the 1920’s. Nor-Co-Hol“The correct bathing alcohol” is featured in a Feb. 1922 Norwich flyer. And it is described as“grain alcohol modified for bathing and rubbing” in the August 1921 issue of Practical Druggist( The‘fat reducer’ massager works on the principle of“ oxidizing the fat cells” The flyer shows 12 different areas on which to use the device. Including Diaphragm and Abdomen, Shoulder Blades, Neck and Arms, etc. however it cautions“ women should never use the device over the bust” The box measures 13” x 7- 1/2” x 2- 1/4” It all weighs about 3 lbs. This is a vintage Elco Lindstrom& Co. Violet Ray Quack Medicine Health Generator. It comes in an original wooden box carrying case. For the most part it appears to be in very good shape but it appears that it may be incomplete. In my photos you see 5 glass tube attachments( one of these is broken) I believe originally there were 6 glass attachments. Please see my photos for total inventory of parts. Other things may be missing. The blue lightbulb glass is mostly unattached from it's threads. The case is in good shape but the top and bottom have cracks and there is other wear( see photos) I do not know if this will work and it is being sold as a relic of Quack Medicine.I also noticed an electrical tape repair to the cord that goes to the handset. The New Method In Health Culture. A Guide to Home Treatment of the Sick" Published in 1902, a 16th edition, by Health-Culture Co. New York City. The author is W.E. Forest. B.S. M.D. I don't know what the initials"B.S. stand for. But I have my suspicions. The book is a comprehensive guide to some of the most amazing quack medicine cures I have seen in one volume. From weight control, to gluten gum to curing constipation with a massage roller( this is a sample of the thought processes common in the earliest part of the 20th century. There are 323 pages of text. Drawings, photos, and in the back an additional number of pages with illustrated quack medicine devices and descriptions. The book is completely intact. The hinges are loose on the next to last page only. The book has white stains on the covers. The inside first page and ... morelast page have red edge stains. Pages are somewhat yellowed. The pages are of slick paper. Rather than"pulpy" paper. Top and bottom of the spine show wear from use and shelf sitting. The interior pages are all good. There is no bad odor.
