This"supposed" medicine was purchased with the hope that by taking this you could build up your immunity against diseases( such as Malaria) Many of the soldiers in the Civil War( especially those going to the New Orleans area) bought this to try and avoid getting Malaria. Kutnow's Powder Antique Vintage Aqua Blue Glass Bottle Quack Medicine England
This is an antique Kutnow's Powder bottle. Kutnow's was used to(supposedly) cure everything from liver problems. Kidney problems, headaches, gout, etc. The bottle has a mold seam that ends at the base of the neck and measures 4-3/4" tall, 2-1/2" wide across the front and 1-3/4" wide across the side. The bottom is embossed with.K s. P. The bottle has a line in the lip which I think is a production flaw but may possibly be a crack. It also has some scuffing. This is an auction for an antique bottle of Fulton's Diabetic Compound. The bottle is about 8-1/4" tall and 2-3/4" wide. The bottle seems to have never been opened and still contains all of it's original contents. The label is still about 85% present but damaged. There is a name penciled in on the label of a John J. Fulton(Last name is partially missing due to tear) John Fulton was the owner of John J. Fulton Co who obviously made this medicine. It is unknown if this is his actual handwriting but from fading you can tell it was written onto the bottle a very long time ago! The bottle has many air bubbles throughout with one burst surface bubble in the back of the bottle. There are no other chips. Cracks, or scratches noted. It tells all about it including a money back guarantee. Testimonial and instructions right on the box. Even better was a small folded up piece of paper from the company that was producing it not only advertising it's other products but also tells all sorts of different uses for the product purchased. It must have been a wonder drug for all its medicinal properties. They stress it being a natural cure for: An iron tonic Minor Cuts and Bleeding A Mouth Wash and Gargle Emergency Burns and Cuts Drinking Water Supplement Poison Oak and Ivy Tired and Tender Feet Minor Skin Irritations A Nasal Douche Other products that the company carried were Conquerine. The bottle is slightly shorter than that. Rare 4-11-44 Gonorrhoea Medicine Bottle Date unknown. Though I suspect this bottle dates to the 1920's or 1930's. Approximately 7" x 2" Paper Label, Screw Top Closure. Amann Manufacturing Co. Portsmouth, Ohio My research has turned up little information on the 4-11-44 brand. Other than a U.S. Government court order from 1919, calling for the confiscation and destruction of a seized shipment of 4-11-44 that was being transported from Ohio to Pennsylvania. Apparently these bottles of"medicine" contained not much more than what amounted to a salt water solution, meant to be injected directly into the penis, to cure Gonorrhoea, Gleet, Leuchorrhoea, The Clap and whatever else might be ailing you. This particular brand of Snake Oil was apparently marketed primarily to poverty stricken African Americans, who would identify ... morewith the"4-11-44" brand(see explanation below) and believe this was the"lucky" cure for their variety of venereal diseases. I listed this as a quack medicine but have not researched it so I could be wrong. The bottle is small. 2 3/4" long and 1 1/4" across on the bottom. It is not square as the sides are octagonal. The top extends from the base by about an inch. It has an inside diameter of 3/4" and an outside diameter of 1 1/8" Nice aqua color and quite clear as I think you can see in my pictures. I forgot to take a picture looking directly at the top and at the bottom. I will do so and add later. Some air bubbles. Lettering is embossed. No chips or cracks. Unopened bottle of Foley's Honey and Tar Compound in the original box, complete with the directions/ advertising page. According to the label, it is an expectorant and demulcent for coughs, cold, hoarseness, and children's coughs which should not be neglected. These pieces are in good condition- the bottle retains its original cork and is unopened, the paper label is complete with some light stains as shown. The box top is rough, the flaps are gone and there is a 2.5" approximately) tear on the left side, a smaller tear on the right ... moreside. The direction sheet is VERY fragile. It measures approximately 11.5" tall by 11" wide. The crease lines from being folded are thin and some of them are split, there are holes in the fold corners. It would probably best preserved framed.
