Davis& Kidder's Patent Magneto-Electric Machine For Nervous Diseases. Manufactured by W.H. Burnap. New York City, 1854. A great piece of 19th-century medical quackery consisting of a metal mechanism that is cranked so that a static charge is built up and delivered through the two handles that the afflicted person is suppose to hold or apply to themselves. It has a round metal pull on the outside of the box that operates a lever by the magnet inside the box(photo#9) Retains its original printed label and instructions on the interior of the lid of this mahogany case. Many people fully believed the treatment worked. Electricity was a new and novel force in the 1800's and most patients had no prior exposure to it. Adding to it's curative mystique. Beautiful box. Case measures 4.5" high x 10" long x 4.5" deep and contains brass and metal wheel and gear and a large horseshoe shaped magnet. Connected to a brass rectangular frame. Frame has two large gear wheels, and two velvet covered spools that are rotated by turning the wheels with an ivory and brass handle. Inside of the case are two metal cylinders with cords that fit into opposite sides of the case. The inside top has a paper label with instructions, and testimonials/recommendations of patients, and signed by W.H. Burnap. Everything appears to be all original. Th ere is a stain on the label. And what I would consider typical wear for a mechanism this old, but I am not an expert, this is just my opinion. Please refer to photos, and let me know if you would like more pictures. Patent Magneto Electric Shock Machine - Possibly an older Davis & Kidder unit?
Here is a very old. Ornate shock machine. It looks like an older version of the Davis& Kidder units, but I am not 100% sure. The directions in the lid of the box do look like Davis& Kidder. The magnet and coil unit look like Davis& Kidder also. But no where does it say Davis& Kidder. If you look at the main wheel. It is a very ornate casting. So is that handle. The frame rails are made of brass, which are not corroded in any way. This is a no reserve auction and the shock machine will go to the highest bidder. This antique patent medicine/quack medicine Davis and Kidder's Patent Magneto Electric Machine for Nervous Diseases. This machine uses a magnet to generate an electric current which would have been passes through the body of the patient. This machine does not have the handles. But some could easily be fashioned. I have never tried this machine, and make no warranty to its working condition. All of the gears move appropriately. There is one brass bracket missing that holds one of the back corners together. Davis and Kidder's Patent Magneto-Electric Machine and a Dry Cell Device
Here we have two grand examples of the height of modern patent medicine technology from the 19th Century. I found the Davis and Kidder's Patent Magneto-Electric Machine in the attic of my 1825 built farmhouse when I took possession. The Dry Cell device was found in the attic of another house I was cleaning out. Here is what you get: The Davis and Kidder's Patent Magneto-Electric Machine in the condition shown in the pictures. The belt is actually a leather thong. I have cranked the machine quite rapidly but I was unable to get a voltage reading. If you feel the need to treat your Nervous Diseases with this machine. You will have to clean the contacts and probably re-energize the magnet. The magnet is still magnetic, though not as strong as it was when new. The key to the lock is missing. The handle on the crank is missing and there ... moreis a bend in the arm. Take a close look at the pictures. You also get the two finger cups and wires with the eyehole pins on the ends. The pins originally were split and have lost one half of the split shaft. You can see this in the pictures. The patent date of the machine is August 1, 1854 according to the label with the instructions and April 18, 1854 according to the box stamp. The second item is a box with much the same purpose as the machine. It is a nice wooden box that has seen worse treatment. But contains batteries to store electricity to be delivered for the same therapeutic purposes as the machine. The controls appear to be all there, but there is a battery missing under the top half cover. There is no data plate and I chose not to disassemble it to see what all the writing on the big battery was about. This item has no electrical charge and I would be shocked if it would take or hold one. Based upon a rolled up piece of news print found in side, dated May 5th, 1904, it is obviously a 19th Century relic. Talk about your weird stuff! I dug this out of my old storage unit. It was in a box with a Peter Gabriel record. What's funny is the song shock the monkey was circled. I don't have a record player so I ordered a cd with that same song on it and I'm listening to it now as I list this. LOL. Anyway this box is made of some beautiful old wood and its 9 inches long 4 inches deep and 4 1/2 inches tall. It appears to be missing some type of belt to drive the mechanism so I'm not going to screw with it and shock my monkey. The earliest date printed inside the lid is. London 1862. I looked this thing up and mine seems to be the most decorative of the ones im seeing online perhaps it was made earlier or it was a fancy model.Hard to tell? Old Antique F. Geiser Quack Medical Shock Magneto Cure All Device
Offered at auction is an old antique quack medical device from many decades ago. This device came from a deceased medical doctor’s estate. I am not certain of its actual age but quite possibly it is from the 1920’s. This device is in a case that is about 7 ½” x 7 ½” x 6” and weighs just over 10 lbs. I am not certain how it works or what it was used for. It was possibly a cure all shock device. It is marked F. Geiger. Phila. There is a green variegated marble like surface on the top side of the inside of the case. It is in nice clean condition and has a coil of external wiring included. Some of the outer coating on the wiring is starting to flake(see photos) I have taken photos of the internal works which depicts a magnet like object surrounded by copper. Thanks for looking! You are bidding on an antique Magneto-Electric Machine for Nervous Diseases. This machine was manufactured by S. Maw& Son in London. England. Online research indicates that this machine was manufactured in the late 1800's. This machine is in excellent condition and works very well! The wooden box is constructed using splines and is in excellent condition. There is a minor crack in the back right top. See photos for more detail. The crank handle turns the gears easily and the brass frame and gears are in excellent condition. The finish on the magnet is near mint. The brass knob on the left end(to increase the power output) operates easily. A small area of black paint is missing on the crank handle. There are a couple of small cracks on the wooden portion of one of the handles. See photos for more detail. The handles ... moreand pins are original but the attached wires have been replaced. The lock appears functional but I do not have a key for it. The paper instruction sheet has a few stains and a small nick in it but is in good condition on the lid of the box. Turning the crank while holding the handles produces the expected tingling/shock feeling. This machine works as it should. The wooden box measures 10" long x 4 1/2" wide by 4 1/4" tall and weighs 6 3/4 pounds. This is an excellent machine and would make a fine addition to any collection. Contact me with any questions. Okay so I have researched to no end on this piece. It is unmarked but shares an identical frame with the Tesla No. 30 which leads me to believe it could be manufactured by Tesla. It is super old. I would guess turn of the century or possibly earlier. It is missing one screw and a wingnut type contact that goes on the end of the shaft with the brass gear. OLD DAVIS & KIDDER'S MAGNETO ELECTRICAL QUACK MEDICAL DEVICE W H BURNAP NY NY
Here is a very old mahogany-cased quack electrical medical device. Davis& Kidder's Patent Magneto-Electrical Machine For Nervous Disorders. It is a magneto. Like the ones in old telephones, and the faster it is cranked the more current it puts out. Check out the awesome old graphics on the inside of the box lid. The instructions on how to use it are printed there. Also are some testimonials from professors and other professionals about the wonders of the machine and they are dated 1854. It all appears to be there except for the wires and handles for the patient to hold. The original working key is even there. When it is cranked it spins freely, but I did not check to see if it is putting out any current. The only damage I see is a missing brass corner on the box and some open joints and some loose brass corner pieces. It has some ... morescratches, etc. but nothing major. Typical of something this old. I tend to leave things in their as-found state so as not to ruin any patina or anything of that nature. Check the photos and look carefully at the details as I consider them part of the description. It measures 4 1/2 inches tall, 10 inches across the front, and 4 1/2 inches deep. It weighs 7 1/2 pounds well protected and boxed, and will ship via priority mail. I will be happy to combine purchases, when applicable, to save postage costs. And I suspect that there will be something of interest to just about everybody. Here's a museum quality. Working Joseph Gray& Son Magneto Electric Machine with an Improved Magnetic Indicator. It is among the most seldom seen and the most sought after of all the early Patent Magneto Machines, and it is rarely found in such pristine, working condition. Unlike the portable electric machines offered by Davis& Kidder(and others) The Gray Magneto Electric Machine featured a meter embedded in the lid. The meter's arm was connected to a mechanical regulator, built into the underside of the lid, whose construction is a work of engineering art. When the thumbscrew ... moreon the left side of the cabinet is turned, the magneto's governor moves incrementally, and the the rack and pinion gearing system, connected via a pair of rods to the lower assembly, drives the meter's arm to indicate the intensity of the shock to be administered- on a scale ranging from 0 to 100. The pictures should give you a pretty idea of the device's clockwork-like construction. But you really have to see it and hold it to fully appreciate what a marvelous instrument it is. Condition. As you can see, is excellent to near mint throughout. The brass gearing is exquisite, and- though a bit sticky in spots- it moves the arm on the meter as designed. The magneto is among the nicest original examples you'll ever see. Felt covering is nearly perfect, with very little wear, and the original paint is likewise almost like new. Original braided brass wires that run to the handles are in nearly perfect condition, with no wear and no fraying. Handles are neither corroded nor dented, and inside of each handle is the original absorbent batting material so the handles could be dipped in a salt water solution to intensify the shock. This is a Magneto Electric Machine. Patented April 27, 1897, and manufactured by Selchow& Righter, a popular toy manufacturer, inventor of Scrabble and other classic games and toys. In it's time, this device was marketed as a'toy' for childen and adults, although similar items were sold as'quack' medical devices claiming to"Strengthen the entire nervous system" as this one does as you read in the original instructions included with this item(pictured) The instructions explain it all. Up for auction is this antique Victorian quack.Edical Magneto-Electric shock machine. This machine was used to treat nervous diseases, as well as toothaches and whatever else ailed you! I think the machine is complete, but I'm not sure. I hooked it up and followed the instructions, but I didn't get any shocks. Not sure if I was doing it right, or if it just doesn't work any more. There are some beautiful graphics on the label. The label is a little bubbly and lifting a little bit in parts, but is still affixed to the lid of the box pretty good. It looks like the band attached to the cog has been repaired with thread or string which is illustrated in the last photo. The handle moves freely and easily moves the blue velvet covered mechanism inside the box. The machine has some overall wear throughout due to its age. Here is a really nice shock machine made by Davis and Kidder. It is in overall really good shape considering the age. The brass shines very nicely. The case is in good shape. Shock probes are present. But missing the wires. The small latch that the lock latches on is broken, and the pulley string has seen its better days. RARE MAGNETO ELECTRIC MACHINE Late 1800's Early 1900's EXCELLENT CONDITION
This original Magneto-Electric Machine for Nervous and Other Diseases is Museum Quality. I cannot find an actual makers mark on machine. But it is complete and in excellent condition. Oak box does not have any cracks, or missing corners. The finish is still intact. Top and sides are nailed together, and bottom has screws, and the hinges are brass. Box is made with"butt" joints, and are not dove tailed. Inside is very clean, except all the way in the bottom, it is dusty. Crank works, motor spins, comes complete with the handles, which I believe might be brass or copper? The cords connecting the handles to the box are in great shape, except where they connect to the handles and the box. They are frayed on the ends, but could be shortened enough to fix. Also, the"ground" wire inside is disconnected so it cannot accidentally ... moreshock someone.I have not tested the machine, but it appears to be complete and I have no reason to believe it would not work. The only issues I found with the piece, is there are 2 screws on the bottom that hold the"generator" in the box that have surface rust, and someone wrote in pencil on the upper left hand side of the label that looks like 4 small letters. I did not try to erase it, but the rest of the machine/box/handles are in great condition This piece is in a very rare. Square" shape instead of the usual"rectangle" shaped box. This would be a great addition to a present collection, to start a collection, or even a wonderful museum piece. Machine is approximately 6" High. 6" Wide, and 5" Deep, and very heavy!

This model was later marked W.C. J. Neff on 3 1/2 S. Seventh St. Philada. I believe this model is prior to the company's merger. This machine is marked on the leather band. Manufactored by J. Jeff No. 622 Cherry St. Philada. The company was listed in Philadelphia as a manufacturer. The machine sits on it's original dark wood base. The base shows the original hardware which appears to be all hand made. This wonderful antique machine has all of it's original paint. The leather still has some of the gold gilt lettering intact. It does obviously have some wear and tear as it is an authentic antique. The brass parts are all tarnished or show an aged patina. ... moreThe middle of the leather covered tube has an iron rod that does come out. I have a wooden box housed device with a large paper label inside the lid for- Davis& Kidder’s Patent Magneto-Electric Machine For Nervous Diseases. Patented Aug. 1. 1854. The label has the 2 endorsements by Dr. Silliman and Prof. Page found on earlier manufactured examples as I understand it. The directions are also given at bottom center of the label. Below this is another paper label glued to it with- Sold by Eaton Brothers. Agents, 34 Liberty Street, New York. The patent date is stamped on the top edge of the wooden box and on the brass frame inside. It looks to be complete except for the lock front and key. The crank does turn the(solenoids? though the old string belt slips and sometimes it needs a push start. Turning the crank on front produces a mild electric shock to the patient who is holding the 2 metal cylinders in his hands. ... moreThe strength of the current is controlled by the speed of crank turning along with pulling the brass button on the left end of the box which controls a metal bar sliding on the magnet. The cylinders appear to be connected to the machine by braided brass wires. I haven’t tried it! The device was manufactured by W.H. This auction is for an antique Davis& Kidder Magneto-Electric Machine quack medical device that originally gave the subject shocks from a hand crank magneto. A few years ago. I had the insides from one of these, but sold it when I figured out what it was. This auction is for the wooden box only. The corners are reinforced with brass and it has a lock with a shield shaped escutcheon. The label is intact inside the cover, but there are no other parts included and no key. The outside has some marks and spots, but no serious structural or other damage. There are built-in holes on the sides for the cords, attachments and the hand crank and it measures about 10" x 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" It has a patent date from 1854, but there is also an endorsment from a doctor included and dated 1864. The makers claimed that it could relieve pain, as well as cure cancer, consumption(tuberculosis) heart disease, lockjaw(tetanus) spinal deformities, and more. A great piece of 19th-century medical quackery consisting of a brass mechanism that is cranked so that a static charge is built up and delivered through the two electrode handles that the afflicted person is suppose to hold or apply to themselves. Retains its original printed label and instructions on the interior of the lid of its mahogany case with some water stains present on the label. The string for the pulley was inside the ... morebox. Broken but can easily be replaced. One of the original electrode handle wires looks to have a very old repair to it the connections with a vintage sort of electrical tape. No key for lock.
