Retains its original printed label and instructions on the interior of the lid of its wooden case. Reads"Davis& Kidder's Patent Magneto Electric Machine. FOR NERVOUS DISEASES' There is no date on this object. But from research, it dates to the mid-1850's. It may not be complete, although it does have the crank and the metal cylinders for the"patient" to hold. It appears to be missing the lock key and possibly a pair of wooden handles for the"doctor" to hold. Also. Hubby think a belt is missing on the inside. The gears turn, but not the velvet-covered portion. Turning the crank on front produces a mild electric shock to the patient who is holding the 2 metal cylinders in his hands. The box is intact and solid. The inside label looks great. Box measures about 10” long x 4 1/2” wide x 4 1/2” high. Fun item! I can sell your stuff on e B a y for you! It’s the model M Renulife outfit and it comes with six implements– one might be missing. When you connect the probes or attachments and turn the dial they glow purple and emit an electric charge– kind of like a low power shock therapy. The kit is in excellent condition and works great! Very rare to find these sets in this condition and especially rare to find one working. The case measures about 12" wide and the set is guaranteed old! Neat piece! A great piece of 19th-century medical quackery consisting of a metal mechanism that is cranked so that a static charge is built up and delivered through the two handles that the afflicted person is suppose to hold or apply to themselves. It has a round metal pull on the outside of the box that operates a lever by the magnet inside the box(photo#9) Retains its original printed label and instructions on the interior of the lid of this mahogany case. Many people fully believed the treatment worked. Electricity was a new and novel force in the 1800's and most patients had no prior exposure to it. Adding to it's curative mystique. Beautiful box. Case measures 4.5" high x 10" long x 4.5" deep and contains brass and metal wheel and gear and a large horseshoe shaped magnet. Connected to a brass rectangular frame. Frame has two large gear wheels, and two velvet covered spools that are rotated by turning the wheels with an ivory and brass handle. Inside of the case are two metal cylinders with cords that fit into opposite sides of the case. The inside top has a paper label with instructions, and testimonials/recommendations of patients, and signed by W.H. Burnap. Everything appears to be all original. Th ere is a stain on the label. VINTAGE WESTERN ELECTRIC AT & T SHORTWAVE RADIO DIATHERMY MACHINE QUACK MEDICINE
This is a pretty scarce Western Electric apparatus. This is a short wave radio Diathermy medical device. This has some age to it and it looks late 40's to early 50's to me. Somehow. This dude takes short wave radio waves and it creates deep, penetrating heat(quack medicine at it's finest, although these are still in use today) I plugged this in and it lit up and I am pretty sure it still works. This thing is compact at 16" x 16" x 11" and must weight at least 40 pounds. The case is built like a tank and has a drawer that the two heating pads and cords are stored in it. The case has a couple of scuffs, but is well built and in good shape. The lid is removable and the wood back is held in place by four screws. This is a strange old piece of"medical" quackery. I don't know much about it other than it was in my parents basement and they are cleaning things out like the many late 1800's and early 1900's blueprints I had for sale and the glass negatives. The man who used to live there had several strange things like this that we are finally getting around to selling. My dad said this actually works. Or at least gets current through it, but we don't really know what it does. There are no markings with a name that I can see. The front of the box has a pretty scrolled silver lock(that works) and the box opens up to see the handles with the electric cords and the knobs and whatnot. Unique and one of a kind item- a piece of wood apparently from the Pedal Bourdo pipes from the organ taken from the Slater Mansion in Milton, Mass. that also has an c1897 Boston Globe newspaper piece of medical advertising from the Hallock Medical Institute for Electric Pills for Men! There is a typewritten note dated 12/25/71(must have been a Christmas present to someone) on the back that states the following: Gordon- The clipping was in the Boston Globe of Sept 15. 1897 found in the attic of 85 First Parish Road. The wood is from the Pedal Bourdo pipes from the organ taken from the Slater Mansion in Milton, Mass. Slater was of first large scale knitting mile in this country. In Rhode Island. Here is a very old. Ornate shock machine. It looks like an older version of the Davis& Kidder units, but I am not 100% sure. The directions in the lid of the box do look like Davis& Kidder. The magnet and coil unit look like Davis& Kidder also. But no where does it say Davis& Kidder. If you look at the main wheel. It is a very ornate casting. So is that handle. This antique patent medicine/quack medicine Davis and Kidder's Patent Magneto Electric Machine for Nervous Diseases. This machine uses a magnet to generate an electric current which would have been passes through the body of the patient. This machine does not have the handles. But some could easily be fashioned. I have never tried this machine, and make no warranty to its working condition. All of the gears move appropriately. There is one brass bracket missing that holds one of the back corners together. I first thought this unusual little brass dry compass was no more than a quack medical advertising piece for Dr. Scott's Electric Brushes. But after a little research I found that these brass compasses were included as an accessory that was supposed to somehow test and confirm that brush and other quack medical devises sold by Dr. Scott were functioning properly. He also sold an eclectic variety of different electrical devises that were claimed to cure everything from headaches to cancer. Including an electric corset. I can't even begin to imagine what that was used for! An electric hair brush, an electric flesh brush, and an electric tooth brush. This one lacks it's power cord and I have no idea if it would work if updated with a new one. Maybe an irate husband cut the power cord off this one. Davis and Kidder's Patent Magneto-Electric Machine and a Dry Cell Device
Here we have two grand examples of the height of modern patent medicine technology from the 19th Century. I found the Davis and Kidder's Patent Magneto-Electric Machine in the attic of my 1825 built farmhouse when I took possession. The Dry Cell device was found in the attic of another house I was cleaning out. Here is what you get: The Davis and Kidder's Patent Magneto-Electric Machine in the condition shown in the pictures. The belt is actually a leather thong. I have cranked the machine quite rapidly but I was unable to get a voltage reading. If you feel the need to treat your Nervous Diseases with this machine. You will have to clean the contacts and probably re-energize the magnet. The magnet is still magnetic, though not as strong as it was when new. The key to the lock is missing. The pins originally were split and have lost one half of the split shaft. You can see this in the pictures. The patent date of the machine is August 1, 1854 according to the label with the instructions and April 18, 1854 according to the box stamp. The second item is a box with much the same purpose as the machine. It is a nice wooden box that has seen worse treatment. But contains batteries to store electricity to be delivered for the same therapeutic purposes as the machine. The controls appear to be all there, but there is a battery missing under the top half cover. There is no data plate and I chose not to disassemble it to see what all the writing on the big battery was about. This item has no electrical charge and I would be shocked if it would take or hold one. Based upon a rolled up piece of news print found in side, dated May 5th, 1904, it is obviously a 19th Century relic. Talk about your weird stuff! I dug this out of my old storage unit. It was in a box with a Peter Gabriel record. What's funny is the song shock the monkey was circled. I don't have a record player so I ordered a cd with that same song on it and I'm listening to it now as I list this. LOL. Anyway this box is made of some beautiful old wood and its 9 inches long 4 inches deep and 4 1/2 inches tall. It appears to be missing some type of belt to drive the mechanism so I'm not going to screw with it and shock my monkey. The earliest date printed inside the lid is. London 1862. Beautiful assortment of museum quality technological and musical gadgetry this week, so regardless of what you like to collect. I think you'll find something that interests you. Here's an Improved And Compound Magneto Electric Machine. Manufactured ca. 1850 by Asahel Davis of Lowell, Massachusetts. The apparatus was the first in a long line of boxed magneto machines developed and marketed by the three Davis brothers- Asahel, Ariel& Daniel- and later copied by numerous 19th century entrepreneurs. A smaller and simplified version of Daniel Davis's Improved Magneto Electric Machine of 1848, it featured a similar mechanism but was housed in a mahogany cabinet measuring approximately 10" x 5" x 5" Its operation ... morewas straightforward: as the magneto was cranked, two cylindrically shaped"handles" attached to the field via wire leads on the left side of the cabinet delivered an electrical current deemed to be of therapeutic value to the recipient. As you can see in the photographs. Condition is very good throughout. The"handles" are long gone, but the apparatus is otherwise complete, the lid label is undamaged and wholly legible, and the the crank turns the magneto as designed. Drive belt is a replacement, but the felt covering on the coils is original(though worn, as you can see) Cabinet is in excellent condition, with no damage. RARE Pat.1889 Dr. Scotts Quack Medicine Electric Curler and Button Hook Combo
This is a rare Antique Dr. George A. Scott's Quack Medicine Electric Curling Comb with attached Button Hook. It was invented and patented in 1889 by Englishman George Scott who supposedly added magnetic power to his devices in an effort to cure headaches. Etc. His inventions did not last past the 1890s, thus the rare quality of this item. The item is in good antique condition all teeth intact, no missing parts with a very nice walnut handle. Richard Van Vleck Dr. Scott's Quack Electric Devices Dr. Scott. An Englishman, was the most prolific advertiser and maker of"electric hair brushes" and related quackery in America, in the 1880's. He ... morereceived his first U.S. patent for a brush handle in 1872, and introduced his line of"electric brushes" in 1880. The Scott brushes and other devices all contain slightly magnetized iron rods in their handles, thus, the curative power could only have been provided by magnetism. However, Scott apparently preferred using the term"electric" in all of his advertising. Although, hair growth and relief from headaches are the two obvious claims that would come to mind for the possible use of an electric hair brush, Scott went on to make many wild claims for the curative power of his electric brushes. The conditions his brushes could cure included constipation, malarial lameness, rheumatism, diseases of the blood, and paralysis. While such claims seem outlandish to most people(and would have in 1880) each disease added to the advertising claims opened up a wider potential market for his brushes. Most of the(financially) successful quacks advertised devices that were claimed to cure almost every ailment, or, at least, the most common ones. The unit wasa for one stop shopping at youur practitioner's place of business. There are 3 functions along the bottom entitled: Cautery. Diagnostic and Sinusoidal. Other then Cautery, which was burning, I'm not sure what the other two did. Also other various pieces on the marble top interior, among which is a knife switch, electrode posts, and a tuning mechanism(looks like a rheostat) Various prods, metallic and glass round out the inventory. Whether it is a complete inventory of all that originally came with it, I do not know, but, if not complete, certainly substantially so. It must have been the MRI of its day. Marked on the interior top: ALOE Co. ST. LOUIS No. 3482 The case measures 17 1/8" X 11" X 8" and weighs about 37 1/3 pounds. The device will be shipped via Fedex Ground within the United States.
