Up for auction is hard to find"Boyd's Battery" quack medicine pendant from 1878- 1879. The most famous of the medical batteries was the Boyd's Battery. They were made with different metals that promised to create a healing electrical current when pressed against your skin. The galvanic properties were released by the different metals reacting to the moisture in your skin. People claimed that they tingled as they worked to drawn out the bad energies from your body and replace them with good energy. Boyd's Battery came out in 1878 and was"improved" in 1879. Wow I hate to sell this thing. What a kooky. Crazy cool piece of medical equipment. Seems to work exactly as intended. I was dumb enough to put it near my skin and sure enough little electrical impulses jumped from the machine to my arm. It comes on and the purple light runs up the tubes. It shows 6 electrodes in the instructions but there is only the throat electrode and the comb electrode included. I don't think they were ever 6 electrodes in this set because there is only 1 missing hole which would be for the general electrode. This thing is crazy cool I love it. Quack Doctor Device 1923 National Radium Emanator from NY NR
Antique quack doctors device made in 1923 in New York by a company called National Radium Products. I have no idea how or if it ever worked although it seems to have been approved by the American Medical Association, it's in good condition and built into a dovetailed oak carrying case that measures 12 3/4 high by 11in. wide by 8 1/2in. deep and it does weigh 12lbs. I've photographed the inside of the back it did have rubber hoses that have rotted away and the disk in the front that holds whatever rotates, I've never seen anything like this and I've had a lot of early quack pieces, if you collect early quack devices this is one of the most impressive and unusual ones I've run into, I can't guarantee it will work but it will make a great conversation piece.

Rare GERMAN RADIOSOL Quack Medicine Violet Ray Device w/14 glass wands & case
Please see my photos and read about shipping and handling. You are bidding on a RARE Antique Electrical Quack Medical VIOLET RAY Device called RADIOSOL. It was made in GERMANY. IT IS IN WORKING CONDITION. And in its original case. There are 2 metal hollow rods, and 14 glass wands, all of which are UNUSUAL, and are intact and working. They produce a violet color, with an electrical sting and sound, when held to the skin. The small wand with two metal ends, sits in the holder loosely, but does produce an orange color. Included in the wands is the RARE Ozone Inhalator wand in 3 pieces. The top piece is attached to the one below it, with a rubber hose which has cracked from age, but the glass pieces are intact. Also the cork wrap around at the middle piece is split and taped. There are 16 metal clips in the case that hold the wands. Three of ... morethe clips have one side broken off, but I have the pieces, and perhaps they can be spot soldered. There also is a small piece of paper with German words, and a little 1" gass tube, see photo 4. The electrical box is all intact and works well, with 110 or 220 volts.The cords are good. The holder for the wand is in very good condition.The inside of the case has its original felt covering, and partitions. The case itself is sturdy, but does show wear and useage, SEE PHOTOS. The handle is missing, but the two clips work well. The case measures approx. 13 3/4" in width, 9 3/4" in depth, and approx. 4 1/4" in height. Here is a VERY rare phrenology device. I have only seen one other one of these and it was in a museum. I have never seen one on eBay. You probably will never have an opportunity to purchase one of these again. It is totally complete except for the key(to lock the box) The batteries are original and quite rare themselves. The batteries have very little power left in them. So the device will not work with the original batteries hooked up. I did build a battery pack that would mimic the original batteries to see if the unit worked. It did. It operated flawlessly. The box is in very poor condition; the top is no longer connected to the bottom, and the whole rear side of the box is gone. The power unit is a nice*bakelite and is in good condition. The cord has some fraying right at the base of the unit. And in multiple places along its length. But nothing serious enough to prevent it from lighting up and emitting the normal electrical discharge ~ which is adjustable with the knob on the end of the power unit. However. The cord deterioration is such that we would definitely not be playing around in bed with it. Or putting undue stress on the cord. Around the adjusting knob. It reads'The Master Electric Co. Chicago. Their construction usually features a combination of a disruptive discharge coil with an interrupter to apply a high voltage. It included a copy of directions for both users and physicians and a complete inventory of glass electrodes that were available at the time with their intended uses. The Fitzgerald Violet Ray Machine is a quack medical device whose advocates claim that it cures practically all ills and woes- unbelievable that such a device could have been allowed on the market and worshiped by so many people. Ah. For the placebo effect! Now the big question- does it actually work? This has a two pronged answer. Yes. When you plug the generator into an electrical socket and rotate the rheostat in the case, a crackling static sound is heard and felt and a violet ray courses through the glass wand- ... moreit works! Now, if you ask does it work to cure ills or alleviate suffering, I would have to say no, unless you subscribe to the placebo effect. In fact, it has been shown that even today when people are told it is a quack device, many still believe it personally has curative effects. The Violet Ray Machine is very functional. But the case shows significant wear, as pictured. The glass wands function by placing them on affected areas of the body to allow the static electricity and violet rays to do their thing. The metal tube functions by inserting it into inaccessible areas or cavities of the body. It is supposed to cure hemorrhoids, pyles, prostatitis, urinary incontinence, etc. Personally, I would rather suffer from these conditions than to allow an invasion of my body. This listing is for the nice quack medical device in an oak case that is pictured for you; I believe it is complete but I cannot guarantee that. There is no indication on the label as to the maker or what the device was originally called so I have nothing to compare my device with to verify that it is complete. However. The directions label is in excellent condition and details the different ways the device could be applied to the user. It is contained in a nice oak cabinet with machine dovetailing, metal handle and metal latches. The piece is a nice conversation piece and a reminder of how gullible people once were regarding cures for sickness. The cabinet is 10 3/4" wide by 7 3/4" deep and 9" high and weighs 12# I have pictured the cabinet several times so you can see how the piece is assembled and how it displays. The front ... moreof the drawer containing the battery is quarter sawn oak; the remainder of the cabinet is simply regular cut oak. The lid has a storage box that the individual pieces are stored in when the device was not being used. The battery drawer pulls out from the front after you remove the two brass nuts that hold it in place. The wire leads have tags on them that are labeled either"copper" or"zinc" indicating where they were to be attached. Estimated shipping weight will be 15# and the shipping cost is based on that weight. Vintage Master Violet Ray Quack Antique Medical Device Shock Therapy -EC
Vintage example of early 1900's quack electroshock therapy device. We did turn on this device and when the lights were off the glass glowed purple. A little scary to use on your body since it started to cause my cell to go haywire. Box is in stressed condition with corners ripped. A typical violet ray device consisted of an ungrounded electrical control box that controlled the interrupter and which housed the magneto coil. And an attached bakelite or other handle housing which contained the high voltage coil and an insertion port for attachments. Handblown Glass evacuated tubes of varying shapes and for different therapeutic uses could be inserted into the bakelite handle to apply the resulting current to different parts of the body. Davis and Kidder's Patent Magneto-Electric Machine and a Dry Cell Device
Here we have two grand examples of the height of modern patent medicine technology from the 19th Century. I found the Davis and Kidder's Patent Magneto-Electric Machine in the attic of my 1825 built farmhouse when I took possession. The Dry Cell device was found in the attic of another house I was cleaning out. Here is what you get: The Davis and Kidder's Patent Magneto-Electric Machine in the condition shown in the pictures. The belt is actually a leather thong. I have cranked the machine quite rapidly but I was unable to get a voltage reading. If you feel the need to treat your Nervous Diseases with this machine. You will have to clean the contacts and probably re-energize the magnet. The magnet is still magnetic, though not as strong as it was when new. The key to the lock is missing. The handle on the crank is missing and there ... moreis a bend in the arm. Take a close look at the pictures. You also get the two finger cups and wires with the eyehole pins on the ends. The pins originally were split and have lost one half of the split shaft. You can see this in the pictures. The patent date of the machine is August 1, 1854 according to the label with the instructions and April 18, 1854 according to the box stamp. The second item is a box with much the same purpose as the machine. It is a nice wooden box that has seen worse treatment. But contains batteries to store electricity to be delivered for the same therapeutic purposes as the machine. The controls appear to be all there, but there is a battery missing under the top half cover. There is no data plate and I chose not to disassemble it to see what all the writing on the big battery was about. This item has no electrical charge and I would be shocked if it would take or hold one. Based upon a rolled up piece of news print found in side, dated May 5th, 1904, it is obviously a 19th Century relic. 1950s era Energizer 519 Medical Device in Peerless Wooden Tray No. 7510-C
Auctioning an Energizing medical device built around 1953. This device is a quack device that was advertised to cure everything from cancer to other ailments. I included a scan from a newspaper article on the arrest of the maker of the Energizer. Walter Schroeder was arrested after undercover agents from the California Department of Public Health did a sting operation and arrested him for selling the Energizer to them. The box itself has worth as it was made based on a Peerless Wooden Tray box which is extremely well made. Unfortunately the box is heavy(12 pounds) includes lead plates for transferring the energy from the box to the users body. I am not trying to gouge on shipping costs. But it is costly to ship.

Bottom opens to reveal area for dry cell(an old dry cell is included but not sure if functional) and the controls for the unit. Operating instructions are inside the lid. Measures 4 3/4" x 9" x 5 1/2" inches. Case has finger jointed corner construction. Very good original condition.
