Now available for immediate purchase: this beautifully embossed'quack cure' bottle. Remarkably bright& incredibly clean; ready for immediate display. With appropriately illuminated background lighting. Strong. High-relief embossing within a proprietary mold reads"COCA MARIANI PARIS" Base is smooth(no pontil scar. Of course) it was blown into a three piece mold, with an applied top. Base embossing reads the same, with the addition of"FRANCE" a letter"E" in the center. The contents of this bottle were nothing less than"cocaine wine" quite literally: the product was wine. Infused with a cocaine solution; pre-dating the FDA by a couple of decades. While former president Ulysses S. Grant was writing his memoirs( dying of stomach cancer) he went to great lengths'extolling the virtues' ... moreof Coca Mariani& the renewed vigor the product lent him. Plainly hand-blown; most probably during the latter half of the 1800s. This is the EARLY VERSION of this bottle; the 1890s one has less embossing& just a tooled top; not applied. Just brought this back from an antique show in Maine. So at this point it is eagerly anticipating an appreciative new home. Superior clarity to this example. But since it was recovered from a historic excavation, it does show some very light scuffs, some small, shallow scratches& a couple of tiny rust marks; it would merely benefit from tumbling, but such treatment is definitely NOT necessary. There is a rough area, but when you look at it, it looks like a flaw from it being made. Not noticeable unless you pick it up and look at it closely. Otherwise in excellent shape. From Buffalo, N.Y. Early cure bottle with complete wrap-around label for A.D. Elmer’s Pain-Killing Balm from A.D. Elmer. Manufacturer, Northfield, Massachusetts. Pale aqua bottle stands just under 5” tall and is BIM circa 1880. The bottle is corked but the bottle is empty aside from dried content residue. The original label wraps around the entire bottle and is in very good condition with overall age toning and light wear. The front of the label states“Nice, Delicious, and Safe to Use! and shows a date of 1865. One side of the label gives directions for external use and the other side gives directions for internal use. The list of both external and internal maladies cured is impressive from toothache, corns, and warts externally to cholera and fits internally. The Swanson Company 5 Drops Medicine Bottle/ Paper Labels This old glass medicine bottle has the original front and back labels. The front label shows the word DROPS over a large number 5. 5 DROPS. Made by THE SWANSON COMPANY. Newark, Ohio. The cork is in the top and it stands about 5 3/4 inches high, It is 1 3/4 inches wide and 1 inch deep. The labels have some wear, soiling, and are not as bright as they once were, but are readable. The bottom of the bottle has an embossed 5, and the makers mark M in an oval that was used by the Obear Nester Glass Co. from 1895 until the mid 1920s. There are no chips cracks or repairs.
