LUTTED'S S. P. COUGH DROPS LOG CABIN DISPLAY PRESSED GLASS JAR DRUG STORE CANDY
LUTTED'S S. P. COUGH DROPS This auction is for a lovely vintage figural LOG CABIN piece known as'LUTTED'S S. P. COUGH DROPS" Which is made out of press patterned glass in a lovely emerald green color! This beautiful vintage heavy green glass container was used as a drug store display. The glass is very detailed with the raised glass on all sides that clearly show this is a log cabin structure. The top fits very nicely on the base and has a look of roof shingles. Inside the shingles are raised letters with the LUTTED'S S. P. Cough Drops advertisement. This covered cabin has 3 windows and a door. There are side handles and the structural base is supported by glass legs. The roofline lid is straight on the center chimney line and lifts off with ease. The interior is equally interesting with a pattern reminiscent of a hardwood ... morefloor or planked. It measures 6 1/4" inches tall. 8 1/2" inches long and 4 1/2" inches wide. The true original was considered quite the interesting piece of its time. The pattern is known today as Log Cabin but was originally called Pattern#78. It was made by Central Glass Company of Wheeling. West Virginia which introduced the pattern in 1875. James Lutted of Buffalo. New York was a leading candy maker and wholesaler of retail display cases and candy jars. The"J.L. cough drop was one of the biggest sellers and was displayed in a log cabin jar embossed with the company name, Lutted's S. P. Cough Drops. The piece is sought after by both collectors of early country store advertising and figural glass. Originals are almost always clear; colors of vaseline, blue and amber are known but are very rare. In clear, a jar in good condition usually sells for $400-450. This piece is a reproduction. How to differentiate a true item from reproduction? Here are the main differences between new and old. Up for auction is fun. Unusual tin that held"Liqwid Center" Medicated Cough Drops from the Iodent Company, 1950s. The tin measures 2.5" x 5" x 1/2" has a lift off lid. Neat graphics of a dripping red cough drop. Note the price imprinted lower left at 29 cents. The bottom has recessed sections where the cough drops were placed. Very unique Smith Brothers Cough Drop Display with three 1 cent boxes of black cough drops. The small boxes are wrapped and sealed so I'm not sure how many are in the box. There is some discoloration to them from age. But not too bad. The display is a cardboard foldup(that is the way it will be mailed. Folded flat) that has a 1cent price. It has smudges on it that looks like finger smudges. There is a stain on one of the corners that I think I showed in the pictures. It is not perfect and you can tell it was definitely used. But it is pretty nice. Can't say I have ever seen one of these. It has no dates. Or manufacturing marks. Cough drop packages say made in Poughkeepsie. NY USA. COUGH/ DROPS. There is a small chip under one edge of the lid. Which I tried to show. But otherwise is great shape.One of the roof panels sinks in a bit. The pictures show the great log cabin details. It’s hard to know when these were made. Ones made in the 1880s were. As far as I know, all clear, and it is speculated that all other colorls were made in the 1920s and 30s. Whatever the sace. This a great centerpiece or could be used as a covered candy dish.
