1860s EARLY GLASS GONORRHEA VD SYRINGE FOR FEMALES DUG IN CIVIL WAR ERA PRIVY
Here's an early hand blown 2 piece glass gonorrhea- venereal disease syringe which we dug from an outhouse privy pit in use during the 1860-1870s. This rounded end female syringe was used to inject liquid cures for venereal disease into women. It measures 6 1/2"long and has 4 tiny holes in the rounded end where the liquid cure could be pushed out of the syringe tube. The glass plunger has 4 separately applied crude rings which held the cotton wadding. Excellent condition with no chips or damage. A tiny bit of light haze from being buried in the ground for nearly 150 years. But pretty clean. This syringe is missing the wadding and seal on top of tube. Prostitution was rampant during the 1800s. And with no protection from venereal disease, it was spread easily. Many soldiers during the Civil War would visit a"house of ill repute" ... moreand contract gonorrhea or syphilis. After they came back home and got married, they would spread the VD to their wife. A common"cure" was mercury which would have to be injected directly into the male or female sex organs with the use of one of these VD syringes. The improved electric machine for nervous diseases' British. 1862. This'Number 1 Machine' comes complete with crank. Electrodes and instruction booklet. Antique Civil War Era Davidson Syringe Box Case Treated Syphilis & Ghonorrhea
Up for auction is an antique Davidson No. 1 syringe box. The syringe this box held was used to treat syphilis and ghonorrhea. It had a thin hard rubber tip and a boric acid solution was suctioned into the syringe. The tip was then inserted into the you-know-what and emptied. OUCH! I don't think it cured anything but I'm sure it would make recipient think twice the next time he had amorous thoughts. The box measures 7" long and is 3" at its widest point. There is minor wear to the outside which features a star on the lid. The hook hardware is complete and in working condition. The lid was joined to the bottom with a paper or cloth hinge but it is gone. The lettering on the label inside of the box is in good condition with some wrinkles and a split on the big"No. 1" graphic in the middle. This is an antique Davidson Rubber Company of Boston. Mass. No. 1 syringe box. The top of the box as shown in Photo 2 has within that black star"CH Davidson Patent Syringe" The syringe this box held was allegedly used to treat syphilis and ghonorrhea. The instructions for care and use& cleaning are clearly set forth in the lid It had a thin hard rubber tip and a boric acid solution which was suctioned into the syringe.
