Buffalo, NY Here is a bizarre and interesting item for collectors of medical memorabilia and oddities. For auction is a book length pamphlet entitled Abuse of the Male Reproductive Organs and the Diseases to Which it Gives Rise. Published in 1894 by the World’s Dispensary Medical Association. The WDMA was headed by Dr. Ray Vaughn Pierce. Then one of Buffalo’s best known citizens. During the 1800’s. The WDMA was a gigantic mail order organization which manufactured and distributed patent medicines. Many of which contained opium. Dr. Pierce also ran a gigantic. Nationally renowned medical clinic/hotel in Buffalo called The Invalid’s Hotel. The first 73 pages of this softcover booklet deal mostly with male reproductive disorders. The final ... more24 pages describe and illustrate the fabulous Invalid’s Hotel. This book is slightly soiled on the outside and a few of the pages have some staining on the top outer edges. But nothing that interferes with the enjoyment of the illustrations or the reading material. The back cover is missing, but the book is readable and solid for a publication of 1894! You be the judge! This wonderfully intriguing publication is either a testament to the professional attributes of Dr. Pierce or a tribute to a quack and medical chicanery at its finest. Taking into account the state of medical knowledge in that era. I personally feel that Dr. Pierce alleviated a lot of human misery. Either way, the text and the illustrations of the Invalid’s Hotel are priceless! This is one great little medical collectible and truly captures the Gilded Age of the late 1800’s. Labeled and Embossed Cure Bottle, Dr. Pierce’s, Buffalo, NY
Pale aqua BIM bottle with label for Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription manufactured at the Chemical Laboratory of World’s Dispensary Medical Association. Buffalo, New York. This is a hard-to-find early version of this popular quack medicine which still uses the word“cure” on the label which dates it prior to the Food& Drug Act of 1906. The label is in fair-good condition with considerable soiling and wear along the edges– the print is easy to read and the reds are still reasonably bright. The bottle is 8.5” tall and in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. The bottle is crudely and weakly embossed“Buffalo, N.Y. and“R.V. Pierce, M.D. on the side panels and“Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription” on the back panel. Nice early cure from a popular company.
