I first thought this unusual little brass dry compass was no more than a quack medical advertising piece for Dr. Scott's Electric Brushes. But after a little research I found that these brass compasses were included as an accessory that was supposed to somehow test and confirm that brush and other quack medical devises sold by Dr. Scott were functioning properly. He also sold an eclectic variety of different electrical devises that were claimed to cure everything from headaches to cancer. Including an electric corset. I can't even begin to imagine what that was used for! An electric hair brush, an electric flesh brush, and an electric tooth brush. THIS IS A NICE OLD ANTIQUE COMPASS THAT WAS A GIVE AWAY WITH DR SCOTTS ELECTRIC BRUSH IN THE 1800'S. IT IS IN GREAT CONDITION CONSIDERING ITS OVER 100 YEARS OLD. PLEASE VIEW ALL PICS BEFORE PURCHASE. SHIPPING IS QUICK. ENJOY! Dr. Scott. An Englishman, was the most prolific advertiser and maker of"electric hair brushes" and related quackery in America, in the 1880's. He received his first U.S. patent for a brush handle in 1872, and introduced his line of"electric brushes" in 1880. The Scott brushes and other devices all contain slightly magnetized iron rods in their handles, thus, the curative power could only have been provided by magnetism. However, Scott apparently preferred using the term"electric" in all of his advertising. Although, hair growth and relief from headaches are the two obvious claims ... morethat would come to mind for the possible use of an electric hair brush, Scott went on to make many wild claims for the curative power of his electric brushes. The conditions his brushes could cure included constipation, malarial lameness, rheumatism, diseases of the blood, and paralysis. While such claims seem outlandish to most people(and would have in 1880) each disease added to the advertising claims opened up a wider potential market for his brushes. Most of the(financially) successful quacks advertised devices that were claimed to cure almost every ailment, or, at least, the most common ones. Perhaps more outlandish than the medical claims for Scott's brushes is this warning printed on the hair brush box" In no case should more than one person use the brush. If always used by the same person it retains its full curative power. Families sharing the brush. Of course, wasn't in Scott's best interest- better to have two brushes in every home. Perhaps some of the dissatisfied users, for whom brushing their hair didn't cure their constipation, blamed their spouse for sucking up the power of their personal electric brush. For auction is this original 1880 Medical Quackery Brochure for Dr. Scott's Electric Hair Brush. This device is advertised in the booklet to prevent baldness and cure headaches and neuralgia as well as some other conditions. The composition of materials in the brush handle were supposed to produce a permanent voltaic current that solved health problems. This booklet is 5.5 x 3.5 inches in size and about 14 pages. The booklet contains promises and testimonials on the healing powers of the medical hair brush. There is also a folded up sales circular that was found inside that contains information. With gutta percha handle that is magnetized inside, and ornately embossed on the back. Not sure if the bristles are horse hair, or other material. The embossed lettering and artwork are imaginative, elaborate, and over-the-top art nouveau style, typical of the late 1800's; when this brush was made. It was marketed as an"electric" flesh brush, that, when brushed on the skin, would soothe or heal all kinds of ailments. The marketing was as elaborate as the design. There is supposed to be some magnetization inside it. Very good condition for it's age. No chips or cracks or any significant damage or wear. Normal wear and age condition. Could use a good cleaning. SCOTT'S ELECTRIC BRUSH Dr. Scott's Quack Electric Devices Dr. Scott. An Englishman, was the most prolific advertiser and maker of"electric hair brushes" and related quackery in America, in the 1880's. He received his first U.S. patent for a brush handle in 1872, and introduced his line of"electric brushes" in 1880. The Scott brushes and other devices all contain slightly magnetized iron rods in their handles, thus, the curative power could only have been provided by magnetism. At least that's what the ad said for the"Electric Brush" circa 1890's The odd thing is it feels like a slight electric tingle when you use it. It must be the way the bristles are cut. The handle is gutta perchia. The bristles are horsehair. This is the only one of the Brushes I have seen. You can find news print ads on Ebay. But no brushes. The logo on the handle is very cool.
