Which was used in the early 1800’s to perform the medical procedure of bloodletting. ... moreThe exterior body is brass and the blades and cocking lever are iron. The blades, supporting rod, spring, cocking and release mechanisms are encased within the brass body. The top of the case has a knob to adjust the height of the blades to determine the depth of the cut. Turning this knob raises and lowers the bottom portion of the scarificator housing the eight curved blades. The length of the blades protruding beyond the parallel slits in bottom determine the ultimate depth of the cuts. The iron lever is then used to cock the blades. The dimensions of the bottom of the scarificator are approximately 1 1/4 inches by 1 1/2 inches. The height, excluding the blade height adjustment knob and cocking device on the top is 1 1/2 inches. Bloodletting has been used in most of the world cultures and societies as a medical procedure of removing blood from the body to cure numerous ailments and diseases. According to the publication“ Bloodletting Instruments in the National Museum of History and Technology” by Audrey Davis and Toby Appel. This procedure has also been referred to as“breathing a vein. Antique Brass 19th c Scarificator Blood Letting Tool Scarificators appeared in the early 1700s and were used for blood letting. The lever on top of the brass box releases a set of blades that snap out of the slits on the base providing a standardized depth and length of cut. This model has twelve blades. It measures 1 1/2" x 1 3/8" x 2 3/16" high. It is marked with the number 3 on both pieces(see pics) All the mechanics work fine. For your consideration is an antique F.A. Koch& Co spring loaded lancet. Operates by pulling the handle up while depressing the lever. The lancet springs outward approximately 1/4" of an inch. This piece is made in Germany. Is ornate with interesting early design. In overall very good condition; the tip of the fleam is heavily oxidized from use. Research indicates this particular maker. F.A. Koch, mainly manufactured straight razors; appears to be a scarce item produced by this maker. Measures just over 4" long. Please see photos for cosmetic detail.

Three steel backed 2 3/4" pull out blades with quality scales an enclosed inside a brass lining. 6" in length when folded opened. as found in good solid condition. blades can be cleaned. chipping to the edges of the horn case with loss to the end on the one side. Top Physicians acquired their finest instruments from Sheffield in the English-speaking world. Few veterinarians were wealthy enough for Sheffield blades and scalpels. Bloodletting was widely practiced for centuries up until about the turn of the 19th Century. George Washington was famously blood-let to excess probably accounting for his demise. But it was a routine matter. Many people let blood from their livestock and their family members twice a year with their medical check up. Bloodletting was so common that physicians delegated the task to assistants and created phlebotomy as a practice for helpers to do. Barbers did bloodletting. And their barber pole is a sign for the illiterate that bloodletting services were available. The pole represented a cylindrical rube that was given to the customer to squeeze with his or her fist. The white stripe represented the tourniquet used above the cut and the red, of course, represented the blood extracted.
