1878 -1879 ANTIQUE BOYD'S BATTERY QUACK MEDICAL DEVICE PENDANT
Up for auction is hard to find"Boyd's Battery" quack medicine pendant from 1878- 1879. The most famous of the medical batteries was the Boyd's Battery. They were made with different metals that promised to create a healing electrical current when pressed against your skin. The galvanic properties were released by the different metals reacting to the moisture in your skin. People claimed that they tingled as they worked to drawn out the bad energies from your body and replace them with good energy. Boyd's Battery came out in 1878 and was"improved" in 1879. Up for auction I have a"VOLTAMP BATTERY NO.7" This is the"OLYMPIA" MODEL. I believe that all of the working parts for this are present except for the dry cell battery that would have been below the coil. I have no way of test this so it is being sold"AS IS" The instruction panel is mostly complete and is fully readable. There are patent dates in the instructions from the late 1800's. This was manufactured by the"VOLTAMP ELECTRIC MFG CO. BALTIMORE. MD" The original fingerjointed wooden box has some slight normal wear, paint drips and paint flecks. There is a slight separation on the glue joint on the bottom panel. Elec-treat Mechanical Heart Quack Medical device battery operated. Electric 1931. Comes with 3 instruction booklets. Spon ge with cord. The Elec-treat device, internal probe a nd the origina l box. The comb and other spon ge is missing. This 3 piece Quack electric medical device was supposed to be used to reli eve all kinds of ailments and pain. Headaches. Stiff joints. Skin, dandruff. Weak heart, and physical development, sexual"weakness, are all symptoms th at can be treated with this old school device. It does work. Batteries were installed and tested. Bu t be careful. This listing is for the nice quack medical device in an oak case that is pictured for you; I believe it is complete but I cannot guarantee that. There is no indication on the label as to the maker or what the device was originally called so I have nothing to compare my device with to verify that it is complete. However. The directions label is in excellent condition and details the different ways the device could be applied to the user. It is contained in a nice oak cabinet with machine dovetailing, metal handle and metal latches. The piece is a nice conversation piece and a reminder of how gullible people once were regarding cures for sickness. The cabinet is 10 3/4" wide by 7 3/4" deep and 9" high and weighs 12# I have pictured the cabinet several times so you can see how the piece is assembled and how it displays. The front ... moreof the drawer containing the battery is quarter sawn oak; the remainder of the cabinet is simply regular cut oak. The lid has a storage box that the individual pieces are stored in when the device was not being used. The battery drawer pulls out from the front after you remove the two brass nuts that hold it in place. The wire leads have tags on them that are labeled either"copper" or"zinc" indicating where they were to be attached. Estimated shipping weight will be 15# and the shipping cost is based on that weight. Half of the bottom piece of oak from the cabinet was missing and has been replaced with a piece of oak that is 100 years old and then stained(the new piece on the bottom is the lighter color/ the darker color is the original piece of the bottom) Payment is by PayPal and is expected within 24 hours of purchase. Very cool antique item. The last date listed on the label is 1899 regarding the patents- not sure if this represents the actual age. Great condition for its age. Wood box is in great shape; there is what appears to be a thin hairline crack on the top. You can see it on the label as well. Vintage Pilling-Made Philadelphia Battery-medical quakery
On auction is this Vintage Pilling-Made Philadelphia Battery. Used in quackery medicine over 100 years ago. This battery comes in a well constructed wooden box measuring 8.5" x 5" x 5" with tongue In groove corners. The pads, wires, and handles come in the upper compartment while the single cell battery is in the lower compartment. The instructions are printed, and easily read, on the inside of the top lid. The top and bottom compartments are closed with metal hooks. For the collector of vintage medical quackery gadgets this is great find.

Took several pictures so you can see the condition. It must be some sort of electrical device that I was told was used as quack medicine. The Frank S. Betz Co. was from Chicago and Hammond. Portable Double Cell Faradic Battery, In Case, No Batteries
This is an old medical device. Made when people thought that electrical treatment could cure just about anything you could think of. The name on the directions on the inside of the lid call it a"Portable Double Cell Faradic Battery" but it does not say who it was made by. It has no batteries in the bottom, which is probably a good thing, who know how old the batteries would be if it had any, it takes batter cells too. It only has space for what seems to be two batteries, and 4 cords that connect to them, each are labbled for where they go on which battery, but I don't quite understand it, they say something about Zink and Carbon of each battery, I would somehow guess that that has something to do with positive and negative. It also seems to be missing a few of the parts that go in the space in the lid, it seems to be missing ... moresome kind of manual that goes with it and maybe a couple of other parts, but I don't know much about it. I was able to find 2 other things on the directions for the device, they say that It was inspected by Achille St. Laurent and that the serial number for it is 78823. That is about all that I know about it, shipping box dimentions are 10 by 10 by 10.

Show's"BOYD'S BATTERY" on the front. 1879 Lon.Eng. Jan.17, 1878 IMP" on the back side. Complete with the original loop for a chain. This is an early Quack Device. J.C. Boyd's Miniature galvanic Battery that supposedly worked by"galvanic action" due to the"union of metals. W as in a common battery the effect is created by an acid, Boyd's device only needed"the natural humidity of the skin" to cause a beneficial flow of electricity. This was supposed to cure nearly any disease by producing"a proper proportion of electricity" in the blood-or so Professor Boyd claimed. The battery is composed of 12 peripheral disks of copper. Brass, and white metal, surrounding a central copper rosette. Boyd's 1878 patent date makes it one of the earliest quack medical devices. Vintage Advertising Circular for Pulvermacher's Chain Battery
The item being offered is an original advertising circular promoting" Pulvermacher's Patent Improved Self-Restorable Chain Battery. The chain battery promised therapeutic benefits through the administration of electrical charges through the body. It was hailed as something that any person could administer. The front of the circular has an illustration of the chain battery and its use. The reverse contains information about the chain battery. While undated. The illustration and the nature of the product would suggest that it is of late nineteenth century vintage. When unfolded. The dimensions of the circular are approximately twelve inches by nine inches. The circular has been folded. There are also two very small areas of loss at the bottom corners. Apart from this, the condition of the circular is VG+.

It is supposedly a magnetic healing battery from early medical quackery for rheumatic complaints, made of several types of metals and looks like it would need to be polished or cleaned. I think it has copper, steel, brass and another metal, but I don't know much about it other than what I have read online. There is also a black and white Roy Rogers photo pin or pinback, antique photograph of a woman pin that locks in place. It is in excellent original condition with all the accessories and original wiring to connect the hand held accessories to the machine. This machine also features a beautiful condition signed glass battery that pivots on a special patented holder. This battery pivots 90 degrees so that the electrodes will not be submerged in the acid when the device is not in use. There is a nickel plated brass knob on the right side of the case to allow the rheostat cylinder to be moved in and out. There are very interesting 1876 patented spring loaded binding posts on the top panel that accept a pin connection on the top or a wire to be put in the side when the spring loaded ... morecollar is depressed. Effectively is was like mini"shock treatment" Effectively a stimulant caused by electrical current. Rare! Battery come in a wood case(7 3/4" x 3 3/4" x 5 1/2" tall) The end of the case is separating from the front along the right side. In the case is the device itself(with a loose wire on the bottom- not sure how where that goes) A pair of wire leads(which appear to be in very good condition) sponge electrode" sponge is brittle) and"Directions For Using.The.Williams' Batteries" faded, some tears on the right sides of several pages-but all there) there is also a loose piece of old paper with no text on it. Inside ... morethe hinged case cover are more"Directions" The package does not include the"dry cell" which is necessary to run the device. So I was not able to test it and see if it works on my"Asthma' as the directions claim. You'll notice several different connection points along the bottom of the device. Based on the ailment you want to treat, you would plug the leads into selected points. It was also possible to control the magnitude of the energy flow(SHOCK! Early medical electrotherapeutic wet cell battery device. Wooden box. 5 1/4" x 3 1/4" x 1 1/2" Outside finish is rough, inside the instruction paper is rough especially above liquid cell battery. Battery is 1 1/2" dia. A clear plastic sheet was put above paper as protection. Electrodes are 2 1/4" long with brass wire attached. As can be seen half of directions are ruined by liquid battery.
