Up for auction here today is a no 4 D.D. Home medical apparatus. I bought this from a estate sale a few years back for a 100.00 and I am just trying to recoup some of my money. It is missing quite a few different things to actually be considered complete. What it comes with is pictured in the above photographs. And what it is missing is outlined in the condition description. If you are missing a few parts to make yours complete. Or are looking for a box that is in decent shape then this could be the item for you. A couple of good points to mention about this apparatus are as follows: The label is in pretty good legible condition which is more then I can say for some of the other machines I have seen on ebay that have sold. The hinges are in good shape also with no broken flathead screws. Brass and metal hardware is all original. Box was stripped and refinished with MinWax satin varnish and buffed out with 0000 steel wool and paste wax. Instruction label was badly damaged. ANTIQUE DUPLEX OXYGENATOR TURN OF THE CENTURY QUACK MEDICINE
This is a really nice piece that is in fine condition for its age. It is a Duplex Oxygenator made by the Oxygenator Company of Buffalo. New York. This I believe was made in the very early 1900's. It must have cured everything from the common cold, to STD's and cancer. This is a great piece for anyone who collects medial quackery devices. I believe this to be complete and comes in the original aluminum case. I don't have the instructions so I don't know how to use it. Even if I had them, I don't think I'd go and hock myself up to it. Vintage Antique Quackery Quack Medicine Medical Electro Electric shock machine
This is a strange old piece of"medical" quackery. I don't know much about it other than it was in my parents basement and they are cleaning things out like the many late 1800's and early 1900's blueprints I had for sale and the glass negatives. The man who used to live there had several strange things like this that we are finally getting around to selling. My dad said this actually works. Or at least gets current through it, but we don't really know what it does. There are no markings with a name that I can see. The front of the box has a pretty scrolled silver lock(that works) and the box opens up to see the handles with the electric cords and the knobs and whatnot. The box itself is a heavy wood and measures about 9" tall. 7.5 deep and 6.75 wide We would be interested in learning more if you know what this ... moreis just for curiosity sake. This is an antique Kutnow's Powder bottle. Kutnow's was used to(supposedly) cure everything from liver problems. Kidney problems, headaches, gout, etc. The bottle has a mold seam that ends at the base of the neck and measures 4-3/4" tall, 2-1/2" wide across the front and 1-3/4" wide across the side. The bottom is embossed with.K s. P. The bottle has a line in the lip which I think is a production flaw but may possibly be a crack. It also has some scuffing. This is an auction for an antique bottle of Fulton's Diabetic Compound. The bottle is about 8-1/4" tall and 2-3/4" wide. The bottle seems to have never been opened and still contains all of it's original contents. The label is still about 85% present but damaged. There is a name penciled in on the label of a John J. Fulton(Last name is partially missing due to tear) John Fulton was the owner of John J. Fulton Co who obviously made this medicine. It is unknown if this is his actual handwriting but from fading you can tell it was written onto the bottle a very long time ago! The bottle has many air bubbles throughout with one burst surface bubble in the back of the bottle. There are no other chips. Cracks, or scratches noted. The bottom of the bottle says either PCCW or PCGW. The seams stop at the base of the neck. Working Antique Violet Ray Wand Machine With 2 Attachments 1920's Quack Medicine Great old viloet ray machine with two attachments. We tested both and they both worked. We had a good ol time giving everyone in the family a little shock. You just plug it in and turn the knob on the bottom until it comes on. These date to around the 1920's and were considered a cure all and used on a number of ailments including pain relief. Arthritis, and they even made claims it helped build muscles and grow long luxurious hair. As you can see this is in rough shape. It's kind of filthy and looks like it was exposed to mold at some point. The case it's in has a lot wear and the wand itself has wear. This is a rare Antique Dr. George A. Scott's Quack Medicine Electric Curling Comb with attached Button Hook. It was invented and patented in 1889 by Englishman George Scott who supposedly added magnetic power to his devices in an effort to cure headaches. Etc. His inventions did not last past the 1890s, thus the rare quality of this item. The item is in good antique condition all teeth intact, no missing parts with a very nice walnut handle. The Scott brushes and other devices all contain slightly magnetized iron rods in their handles, thus, the curative power could only have been provided by magnetism. However, Scott apparently preferred using the term"electric" in all of his advertising. Although, hair growth and relief from headaches are the two obvious claims that would come to mind for the possible use of an electric hair brush, Scott went on to make many wild claims for the curative power of his electric brushes. The conditions his brushes could cure included constipation, malarial lameness, rheumatism, diseases of the blood, and paralysis. While such claims seem outlandish to most people(and would have in 1880) each disease added to the advertising claims opened up a wider potential market for his brushes. Most of the(financially) successful quacks advertised devices that were claimed to cure almost every ailment, or, at least, the most common ones. Many claims were made for it but common uses were in dermatology(removal of warts. Discolorations, etc. and stimulation of the muscles for a variety of reasons. It was also used as a sex toy. Some practitioners- medical doctors at the time- claimed they could cure practically anything with a violet ray which is probably why it was eventually labeled a Quack" medical device. In fact the device functions much as claimed. The dispute appears to be over what it's actual curative powers are. Their basic construction was invented by Nikola Tesla prior to 1900, who introduced their first prototypes at the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. Most of the antique violet rays in the US were produced before the Depression era and some of the larger US manufacturers of violet rays were Renulife, Fitzgerald and Fisher. Many of the companies who were able to continue manufacturing violet rays after the depression, stopped making them due to World War II when they began manufacturing radio coils or other electrical components for the war instead. This particular machine is supplied with 5 electrodes however one electrode is not working but most likely can be repaired. The glass is intact but the metal end came loose. The kit was also accompanied with a tag guaranteeing the product against mechanical and electrical defects! The case is in good condition with minor scrapes and scuffs. Anatomical 1895 Antique Illustrated Quack Medicine Book Peoples Medical Adviser
Up for auction is an antique"The People's Common Sense Medical Adviser. It was published in 1895 by the World's Dispensary. Which ran the Invalid's Hotel and Surgical Institution, a sanitarium in Buffalo, NY. The Invalids Hotel was started up by Dr. Pierce, who sold a big quantity and variety of quack medicine during the Victorian era. There are many, many testimonials through out the book from people who supposedly got healed at the sanitarium or from The World's Dispensary/ Dr. Pierces Products(see 6th photo. There are plenty of illustrations including pictures of the sanitarium, anatomical drawings and 3 colored plates of skin diseases. The binding of the book is intact but cracked. The front cover is ripped about half way off from the spine. There are a few loose pages. Most of the pages are pretty clean with minor ... morestaining/ smudging, with the cover page as an exception, which has a large stain.
