1871- The Centaur Company is formed by Charles H. Fletcher at 80 Varick Street. New York, New York to manufacture Pitcher's Castoria after purchasing the rights and formula from Dr. Pitcher. It was renamed Fletcher's Castoria. He partnered with with Joseph B. Rose who had, in the same year, purchased forumla for Centaur Liniment. Antique bit of medical quackery OXYDONOR VICTORY. Invented made& sold by Dr Hercule Sanche. Patent years engraved on the 3 5/8" by 1" diameter metal capsule: 1890, 1892, 1894, 1897, 1898. This device claimed to cure almost anything by forcing oxygen into the body. The tube is supposedly filled with carbon and would have been placed in icy water while the attached wires conducted the"life force" to electrodes attached to the patient. We do not have the electrodes. Nickel plating on the capsul is worn and scratched and the woven cloth covering on the wire is worn. Dr Sanche was a notorious quack who moved his operation around the USA and Canada staying just one step ahead of the authorities. This is a rare Antique Dr. George A. Scott's Quack Medicine Electric Curling Comb with attached Button Hook. It was invented and patented in 1889 by Englishman George Scott who supposedly added magnetic power to his devices in an effort to cure headaches. Etc. His inventions did not last past the 1890s, thus the rare quality of this item. The item is in good antique condition all teeth intact, no missing parts with a very nice walnut handle. Richard Van Vleck Dr. Scott's Quack Electric Devices Dr. Scott. An Englishman, was the most prolific advertiser and maker of"electric hair brushes" and related quackery in America, in the 1880's. He ... morereceived his first U.S. patent for a brush handle in 1872, and introduced his line of"electric brushes" in 1880. The Scott brushes and other devices all contain slightly magnetized iron rods in their handles, thus, the curative power could only have been provided by magnetism. However, Scott apparently preferred using the term"electric" in all of his advertising. Although, hair growth and relief from headaches are the two obvious claims that would come to mind for the possible use of an electric hair brush, Scott went on to make many wild claims for the curative power of his electric brushes. The conditions his brushes could cure included constipation, malarial lameness, rheumatism, diseases of the blood, and paralysis. While such claims seem outlandish to most people(and would have in 1880) each disease added to the advertising claims opened up a wider potential market for his brushes. Most of the(financially) successful quacks advertised devices that were claimed to cure almost every ailment, or, at least, the most common ones. Antique Wooden Dovetailed Box with 4 Vintage or Antique Bottles This box has a label on the top that reads"Dr. Hearder Plymouth" There is also a green paper inside the box that gives directions for using Dr. Hearder's Prize Graduated Calbanic Machine. Along with acid. There was evidently a machine in this box at one time. The box measures approx. 6 1/2" tall, 6 3/4" wide and 6" deep. It is dovetailed. There are two hinges in the back of the box and a handle on the top. The top piece of wood of the lid is loose. The inside hinge is loose. The box is tained on the front. There is missing wood on the bottom right corner. This box has significant wear and tear. The label inside is still affixed, but has stain to the bottom. Most of the writing can be read. Inside the box are four bottles. I'm not sure if these ... morebottles were used with the original machine. Two of the bottles have partial labels that indicate they would have contained liquid from Lofthouse& Saltmer. Church Lane, Hull. The bottles measure approx. 5 1/4" tall. SHIPPING IS QUICK. ENJOY! Dr. Scott. An Englishman, was the most prolific advertiser and maker of"electric hair brushes" and related quackery in America, in the 1880's. He received his first U.S. patent for a brush handle in 1872, and introduced his line of"electric brushes" in 1880. The Scott brushes and other devices all contain slightly magnetized iron rods in their handles, thus, the curative power could only have been provided by magnetism. However, Scott apparently preferred using the term"electric" in all of his advertising. Although, hair growth and relief from headaches are the two obvious claims ... morethat would come to mind for the possible use of an electric hair brush, Scott went on to make many wild claims for the curative power of his electric brushes. The conditions his brushes could cure included constipation, malarial lameness, rheumatism, diseases of the blood, and paralysis. While such claims seem outlandish to most people(and would have in 1880) each disease added to the advertising claims opened up a wider potential market for his brushes. Most of the(financially) successful quacks advertised devices that were claimed to cure almost every ailment, or, at least, the most common ones. Perhaps more outlandish than the medical claims for Scott's brushes is this warning printed on the hair brush box" In no case should more than one person use the brush. If always used by the same person it retains its full curative power. Families sharing the brush. Of course, wasn't in Scott's best interest- better to have two brushes in every home. And I found some fabulous primitive antiques, as well as boxes and boxes of antique and vintage hardware that I will be listing for a long long time- someone clearly was a woodworker or dabbled in furniture creation or restoration. There’s something for everyone! O.K. I love me an old quack medicine bottle- the more bizarre the message the better, and this one will not disappoint. What I have here is an antique light blue/green colored bottle that advtertises what it used to hold, Dr. Kennedy's, on one side, Roxbury MASS, on the other, and, MEDICAL DISCOVERY, on the front of the bottle in relief letting. It's a molded glass bottle- the mold line seen at two adjacent ... morecorner edges going up the side of the bottle from the base, and stopping before it gets to the bulbous base. It measures 3 1/4" wide, 2" deep and 9 1/4" tall. It is in excellent solid and sturdy condition. The glass is thick, and there's bubbles, lines, and burps inside- anomolies original to the making. No chips or cracks that I can find at all. LOVE how thick the glass on the bottom is. It's dusty on the outside, and slightly hazy dirty on the inside- so could use a good cleaning, I have not cleaned it in any way- it's as found, and it will make a fabulous display piece or addition to your collection! HELLO FROM SANTA BARBARA CALIFORNIA. THIS ANTIQUE QUACK CURE DEVICE WAS PURCHASED FROM A ESTATE HERE IN SANTA BARBARA. IT IS GOOD CONDITION. IT MEASURES ABOUT 4 INCHES. ALL PIECES PRESENT. The highly decorated nickel plated cylinder is marked"Oxydonor No. 2. Manufactured by Dr. H. Sanche& Co. Montreal, Canada, VICTORY, Diaduction Rules Life" Dr. Hercules Sanche's signature and the Victory eagle trade mark are prominently displayed on the front of the tube. The cardboard box is marked"OXYDONOR, Dr. H. Sanche& Co. Ltd. Montreal, Canada" The two electrode disks are marked"Dr. H. Sanche& Co. Montreal, Canada, Pat Dec 27, 1898" One of America's most notorious quacks, Dr. Sanche apparently moved around a lot, keeping one step ahead of the authorities. His July 27, 1897 patent lists his residence ... moreas New Orleans, and his Aug 3, 1897 patent as Detroit. In 1915, a fraud order was issued against Dr. Sanche& Co. of New York, Rochester, Chicago and Detroit. He soon evaded this setback by marketing his devices from Montreal. In Feb, 1916, the fraud order was extended to cover his Montreal address. This device likely dates from that period. The Oxydonor Victory is simply a metal tube filled with carbon. Unlike the many contemporary galvanic quack devices. It produces no electricity. It was claimed to cure virtually all diseases simply by forcing oxygen into the body. Proponents of Sanche's incredible theory of"Diaduction" the pseudoscientific explanation of the Oxydonor cure)organized as the Fraternity of Duxanimae. In this way, Sanche solicited donations for the cause(Diaduction) in addition to sales of the Oxydonor. New York. This booklet is 32 pages including the covers measuring about 5” x 7.25” I don’t find a date on this booklet but it looks to be from the 1890s or perhaps 1900 or so. This booklet includes a section at the end on quack electric medical treatments titled High-Frequency Currents. This section includes photos of the Cage fro Auto-Induction Current and Artificial Sun Bath and makes numerous medical claims of dubious efficacy(i.e. old age deferred. Expels waste poisons, et cetera) This booklet also makes a number of quack claims about the benefits of Doctor Pierce’s Iron Tonic and Irontic Tablets. The last ... morebooklet also has advertising for the Invalids’ Hotel and Surgical Institute of Buffalo on the back cover. This is an original antique published mostly likely in the 1890s which looks like something that probably came in a box of Dr. Pierce’s Irontic Tablets. 1887 ANTIQUE DR. GEORGE'S DYSPEPTIC SPECIFIC MEDICINE CURE& LITERATURE- QUACK! This is a very interesting antique bottle of Dr. George's Dyspeptic Specific medicine with label. Original cork, contents, and copy of the original literature which accompanied the medicine. It was manufactured by the Superior Medicine Co. of Duluth. MN and the label states"Registered at Washington, D.C. 1887, Patented 1889" The label is 98% intact with slight staining to the top portion. The bottle is distinctly embossed with"Dr. George's Dyspeptic Specific" on the back panel. On the bottom is designated"W.T. and Co. for Whitehall Tatum and Co. although it's very difficult to see in the photo. It contains the original contents which have completely dried and cracked inside. In the photos what appears to be a crack in ... morethe bottle is actually the contents which have cracked. Not the bottle. The original cork has deteriorated at the top but is still present. And. Almost, best of all are the 4 pages of copies of the original literature which accompanied the bottle. They begin with"MY FRIEND; Why suffer longer from a weak. Irritable and rebellious stomach when relief and cure can be obtained so easily! Waste no more time and money upon quack medicines.
