Ancient Roman & Early Medieval Glass -Wolf Collection Antique Byzantine
Roman. Byzantine and Early Medieval Glass, 10 BCE to 700 CE. Ernesto Wolf Collection" By E. Marianne Stern. Published in Ostfildern-Ruit by Hatje Cantz in 2001. DISCUSSION: Far more rare than the ceramic. Stone, and metal artifacts of ancient peoples that are the staple of archaeological museums, glassware also has a long history in Western civilization. The revolutionary Roman invention of the glassblowing iron in the 1st century BC made it possible to produce large numbers of light, thin-walled glass vessels, and resulted in an outburst of artistic creativity throughout the empire. More than 225 exquisite objects, some over 2,000 years old, are presented here in color photographs and precise descriptions-some as delicate and beautifully formed as fine glassware today. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 10"x11" 427 pages, color and line ... moreillustrations, dust jacket. CONDITION NOTES: In fine. New condition. OVERSEAS CUSTOMERS PLEASE NOTE: This is a large. Lot Ancient Roman pottery shards artifacts and glass pieces from Holland
Roman pottery sherds found at Vechten(The Netherlands) Some information about Fectio(Vechten) Fectio. Modern Vechten, was a fort in the limes, the frontier zone of the Roman empire, situated at the site of the bifurcation of the rivers Rhine(which continued to the North Sea) and Vecht(to Lake Flevo and the Frisians) Numismatic evidence suggests that it was founded by the Roman general Tiberius(the future emperor) during the campaigns of 4/5. It was probably used as a military base during punitive raids. The civil settlement of Fectio was probably to the east of the fort. But excavation is not easy because there is a nineteenth-century military settlement on the site(Fort Vechten) However, the ancient fort itself is, together with Nijmegen, Vechten is one of the best excavated sites in the Netherlands; in 1894, it was the site of one of the ... morefirst excavations of a Roman ship. In 40. The emperor Caligula visited Fectio when he was travelling to Lugdunum. The remains of a wine barrel from his personal vinyard have been found. Some thirty years later, the fortress was destroyed during the Batavian revolt and rebuilt as base of a cavalry squadron. The nearby Rhine had already started to silt up, and was later to change its course. Pottery from the kilns of the Tweny-second legion Primigenia at Xanten belongs to this period. During the reign of Antoninus Pius(138-161) the fort was again rebuilt. This time from brick and natural stone. However, by 200, the river had become silted-up and Fectio was no longer accessible by water. The military settlement was destroyed in 275 and not reoccupied. See also my other items. CONDITION: Excellent. No cracks, chips, breakage, or repairs. Minor scratches and scuffs consistent with use and then burial in soil. Typical soil deposits caused by prolonged burial in soil) DETAIL: This is a very handsome. Complete and unrepaired second century A.D. Roman green glass unguent or oil bottle of fairly sizeable dimensions. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1 ½ ... moreand 3 inches in size. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. However the larger pieces of glass are rarely found intact. The Romans for instance produced fluted, engraved, multi-tiered, and cut glass bowls of fantastic quality and design– and only a few intact specimens have ever been recovered intact. In fact even the smaller pieces such as this are rarely recovered intact except as grave goods. This piece as you can see has a fairly well-formed and defined lip. And a neck beneath slightly tapered neck– overall a somewhat primitive specimen. Normally this would have been used to dispense aromatic oils or other unguents. Possessing a very pleasing green color, this bottle is probably amongst the earlier Roman

Vintage Roman Style Amethyst Glass Compote
Vintage Roman style Glass Compote Beautiful Roman style Glass Compote. Made of thick very dark amethyst Glass. The Roman style Glass compote has very nice sculpting around the top.The flower seems to be what remains of some silver overlay, still looks very nice. The Roman style Glass Compote has three feet that support it, that show a lot of ware on the bottom. So I Believe the piece to be very old. In order to see that the piece is Amethyst Glass you have to place it in front of very bright light. The compote is 4.25 inches tall and 4.75 inches wide. Also it has just a couple of very small flee bits, not uncommon for a piece this old, and a mold mark across the bottom( see photo 9) very nice piece in general. Thanks for shopping.
