LONDON FURNITURE MAKERS & THEIR ENGRAVED TRADE CARDS - 17th 18th 19th CENTURY
The London Furniture Makers. From the Restoration to the Victorian Era, 1660-1840” By Sir Ambrose Heal. Published in London by B.T. Batsford in 1953. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: This book was the result of thirty years of research. And includes the names, dates and addresses of 2,500 London cabinetmakers and cabinetmaking firms. There are also illustrations of many of their dramatic and beautiful engraved trade cards. An important reference work. Sir Ambrose Heal[1872-1959] was an English furniture designer and businessman. Heal was the great-grandson of John Harris Heal. The founder of the Heals furniture manufacturing and retail business. He served a two-year apprenticeship to a cabinetmaker in Warwick and six months working for Graham and Biddle, furnishers, of Oxford Street. In the mid-1890s he began designing ... moresimple, sturdy furniture, often in plain oak(in contrast to Heals' standard"Queen Anne" and"Old English" styles) Although initially his designs were not popular with sales staff, who called them"prison furniture" they found a place at exhibitions of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society and soon became so successful that prejudices were overcome. Undoubtedly influenced by the teachings of Ruskin and William Morris, he embraced the use of machinery where appropriate. In 1913, on the death of his father, he was elected chairman of Heals, using this position to champion artistic design within furniture manufacture and marketing. In 1933. He was knighted for raising standards of design, and in 1939 was appointed a royal designer for industry. He established an art gallery at the Tottenham Court Road premises showing works by Picasso, Wyndham Lewis and Modigliani. Artists such as Claud Lovat Fraser designed the company's posters, and its catalogues contained essays by influential art critics. The overall effect was to promote Heals as an iconic brand. Heal's influence over the company diminished in the mid-1930s, when one of his sons became

RARE 17th 18th CENTURY ENGLISH POTTERY -GOLDWEITZ COLLECTION - Sothebys Sale
A Fine Vintage Auction Catalog- Important English Pottery-The Harriet Carlton Goldweitz Collection” CITY/ AUCTION GALLERY/ DATE: New York; Sotheby's: January 20. 2006. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The catalog to the auction sale of an important collection of 17th and 18th century English pottery. Featuring many outstanding and rare examples. Harriet Carlton Goldweitz began collecting antique English pottery in the 1971 when she was invited to join the Wedgwood Society, and she soon became a presence in salesrooms in England and America, starting with teapots and then broadening out to include other pieces of 17th and 18th century English pottery which caught her eye as unusually fine or interesting. She soon made the acquaintance of such knowledgeable collectors and scholars as Kathleen Tilley and Henry Sandon, ... morewho included some of her teapots in his book on the subject. As her collection grew her one rule was that the English pots she bought had to be of types that were exported to America in Colonial days. This beautiful auction catalog includes a prefatory by Ms. Goldweitz, and a longer appreciation of the collector and the collection by Letitia Roberts. Kutoni Imari Ware Ko-Kutani Japanese plate pottery shonzui-de 17th century
Kutoni Imari Ware Ko-Kutani Japanese plate pottery shonzui-de 17th century. This dish has a label on it stating it is kutoni imari and it was acquired during wwII about 1942 I purchased this from an estate This plate Is 11 and 1/4 inches 28.25cm in diameter and stands 3 inches 7.62cm tall I do not have any expertise on Japanese pottery and make no claims of exactly what this plate actually is I did my best to research it and found this information on line. I can not confirm this is a 17 th century peace but I think it is. I do not guarantee anything about the description you will have to make your own conclusion. After looking at hundreds of pictures on line I have determined that having a blue bird as the subject matter and the raised ring around the bottom makes this a very rare peace and that it would be a prize in any collection Condition: ... morethis plate is in very nice condition but it is not perfect. There is a brake on the top left edge approximately 1 ½ inches long and goes in to the plate 5/8 of an inch. It appears to have been repaired many years ago it is not very visible from the front but as you can see in the pictures it is very evident from the back I try my best give clear photos. From the toguri museum Imari ware The Japanese first started to produce porcelain in the Arita region of Saga Prefecture in the 1610s. It was shipped throughout Japan and abroad from the port of Imari. And it was this association that resulted in it coming to be known as Imari ware. Dish with foliated rim. Decorated with a bird and grapevine design in overglaze enamels. The underside with a character mark within a double square in underglaze blue. Imari ware in the Ko-Kutani style. Edo period. Mid 17th century. Within less than half a century after the emergence of Japanese porcelain. Ceramicists had developed the decorative technique of coloring with overglaze enamels, commonly using red, green and yellow. This colored porcelain is known as iro-e, and the early iro-e made in the mid 17th century is referred to as the K

Quality 17th century replica Sciavona Broadsword, Museum Replicas
The Sciavona was a popular Renassaince sword developed in Northern Italy in the 16th and 17th century and from there it spread throughout Europe many ending up in the British Isles where they influenced the famous Scottish broadsword. This style was very popular with cavalry of the period so is appropriate for almost all European armies from Cromwell's Ironsides to the highlanders and to the armies of the 30 years war. The brass pommel was very common on these for a reason I do not know. In my long life I've seen a few originals and the ones I saw all had brass pommels. The pommel is peened not screwed on. Like the originals and the blade is tempered being rather sharp. there is some minor surface rust blemishes from poor storage, easily cleaned. Some light rusting inside hilt could also be easily cleaned. Comes with the scabbard ... morepictured. I purchased this sword years ago from Museum Replica;s and do not think its in production anymore. Maker unknown, probably windlass steelcraft of India but I can't find any markings. Sword measures 40 inches overall with a 36 inch blade. The blade is 2 inches wide at the ricasso and the hilt is 5 inches wide across the back. Its a very impressive piece and most historic. handle in perfect shape.

Also known as Vaisravana or Kubera. It measures about 11.5 inches tall by 9 inches wide by 5 inches in depth(including the bronze lotus mount and lion that it sits on) He is commonly considered to be the god of wealth and protector of the north. Riding on a lion. He has a mongoose sitting on a lotus under his left foot. His right hand holds a citron or lemon(a symbol of fertility) The character of Jambhala or Vaisavana is founded upon the Hindu deity Kubera. But although the Buddhist and Hindu deities share some characteristics, each of them has different functions and associated myths. Although brought into East ... moreAsia as a Buddhist deity. Vaisravana has become a character in folk religion and has acquired an identity that is independent of the Buddhist tradition. Vaisravana is the guardian of the northern direction. And his home is in the northern quadrant of the topmost tier of the lower half of Mount Sumeru. He is the leader of all the yaksas who dwell on the Sumeru's slopes. He is often portrayed with a yellow face. His mount is a snow lion. He is also sometimes displayed with a mongoose. Often shown ejecting jewels from its mouth. The mongoose is the enemy of the snake. A symbol of greed or hatred; the ejection of jewels represents generosity. In Tibet. Vaisravana is considered a worldly dharmapala or protector of the Dharma, a member of the retinue of Ratnasambhava. He is also known as the King of the North. As guardian of the north. He is often depicted on temple murals outside the main door. He is also thought of as a god of wealth. He is sometimes portrayed carrying a citron(a type of lemon) The fruit of the jambhara tree. It is a pun on another name of his. Jambhala. The fruit helps distinguish him iconically from depictions of Kubera. As Kubera. He is sometimes represented

French Ax Steel Ax 17th 18th Century Repro
This ax was reproduced from an original ax from a private collection. The original ax was found on a historical site in France. I do not know the whole story. But it is said the blacksmith shop burned down toward the end of the 17th century and several ax heads were found many years later. We purchased the mold for this ax several years ago, but we have been selling this ax for about 20 years from the original owner of the mold. This has been a very popular ax. The ax is cast of 4140 steel. The overall lenght of the ax is 24" cutting edge is 3 1/2" weights around 1.5 pounds. The ax is a late 17th century or early 18th century style. My personal opinion is, that this was not a working ax, but maybe a weapon for battle or a presentation piece for native americans. I have used this ax for throwing at targets and does quite well. There ... moreare a couple of knock offs of this ax being sold using this one as there pattern, but have found them to be much heavier in weight. The French may have used this ax in the early days or used it for trading with the native Americans. It is an unusually ax and could be used by reenactors doing late 17 century reenacting. The ax will come to you unsharpen as it is safer shipping the ax this way. We also stock extra handles for these ax's. These are darkened in our shop and may not be as dark as shown.

VERY RARE 17TH CENTURY DUTCH DELFT DELFTWARE BLUE AND WHITE PLATE EROTIC SCENE
A late 17th century Dutch Delft faience plate with extremely rare blue and white painted scene of a well dressed gentleman standing amidst a dazzling array of flowers. He is whistling and two birds on either side of him are flying towards him while he holds his left hand in his partly opened coat. He seems to be luring the birds with his whistling and grabbing inside his coat for what perhaps would be"bird seed" or something else that birds like. In a typical 17 th century Dutch humoristic manner the scene refers to making a pass(at two"birds" and to erotic love for that sake. Though not explicitly showing any of this. Surely for most 17 th century Dutch adults a picture like this would hold no secrets. LV monogram mark in blue on the backside. Possibly for Louwys Victorsz. owner of Delft factory“De Dobbelde Schenckan” ... moreor Lambertus van Eenhoorn, owner of“De Metalen Pot” Delft, c. 1680– 1700. Diameter across the rim: approx. 22.4 cm. Height: approx. 2,8 cm. The plate is in o verall good condition. It has the usual wear on the rim edge. With small chips and glaze losses. 36 Polychrome Portuguese antique tiles 17th century
Rare Polychrome Portuguese tile-set description Fine set of 36 Portuguese tiles made in the 17 th century. Simoes- Azulejaria em portugal no seculo 17 tome 1. Page 111) Very Interesting design from anonymous artist over 6x6 tiles that give a beatiful decorative effect. This design was used from 1630 onwards during the whole of the 17th Century. There are not a lot of different Portuguese designs that have 8 different tiles and these are amongst the most beautiful compositions to be used on large walls. On my trip to portugal in 2011. I made pictures(last two pictures) of this design in a Church in Obidos and the Library in Porto were a fine collection of tile panels is on display. These tiles were used to cover walls from chapels and churches and a large quantity of these tiles works very decorative. Size of each tile is 14. 2 x 14. 2 cm(about ... more5.5”square each tile) Some of the tiles from this set have glaze chips to sides. But for Portuguese tiles that age the overall condition is very good. Please look closely at the pictures. I made pictures of the tiles with the largest chips. Please scroll down. Portuguese antique tiles in general are primitively made and therefore colour. Size, shape and thickness can vary. Backside of the tiles is cut as can be seen on the pictures; this is usually the case with 17 th century Portuguese tiles. Please mail if you want me to send larger pictures to your email address.
