Here for sale is a nice primitive 17th to early 18th century covered sugar bowl. Likely English in origin and I believe it to be made from English oak. ... moreHard to tell the surface but I think it to be a dark oak with a smooth but grungy surface. Appears to have notches on each side of the lid and body to help align the lid on to the bottom . It measures 2 7/8 inches tall , and 5 1/2 inches across the lid by 6 1/2 inches across the bottom. Has one age line in the lid which does not go through , good condition overall. Nice and early treenware piece. Used to hold sugar, spices, tea, and etc, but generally referred to now as a sugar bowl. Buyer pays shipping.

Anno 1678 17th Century Engraved Pewter Plate. This plate is definitely an antique. It has a nice patina but was polished at one point a long time ago ... moreand has residue in the grooves. From the Preface: This collection of shorter and easier chorale preludes is designed to supplement Karl St raube's"Chorale Preludes of the Old Masters" Especially for use in church. We therefore selected only those pieces which can be used today- transposed. Where necessary, to more suitable keys. In the case of important chorales, several treatments were included, sometimes in more than one key. Musical value was the primary factor of selection but where possible, preference ... morewas given to compositions not generally available elsewhere. Of the eighty pieces. 17th century peruvian weaving needles

German Apothecary's Manuscript Notebook, 17th century, signed
Welcome! Up for auction is a signed manuscript notebook. Written by a German apothecary towards the end of the 17th century. There are 102 leaves(204 pages) in the notebook. Which measures 17.5mm x 11mm x 1.5mm. Just 14 of the pages are blank; all of the others have writing in German and/or Latin. It is clear from inspection that some leaves(ten, by my count) are missing, but this includes three leaves from the index, where the loss is not so important. A further five leaves are severely damaged with loss of text, seven are cut but without loss of text, and there are a few holes here and there. There is extensive discoloration to the pages(apparently the result of moisture, since there is also a musty odour) without any obscuring of the text. The notebook must once have been a handsome-looking object. With its marbled board covers quarter-bound ... morein parchment. Unfortunately, it is handsome no longer; the covers are very grimy, as is the frayed and worm-eaten spine(although the tiny lettering on the re-used parchment can still be seen) The covers(while still intact) are on the verge of becoming completely detached. All in all, the book requires careful handling. Despite these flaws. The item represents a remarkable survival from an era preceding the dawn of modern medicine, with page upon page of elixirs, potions and electuaries designed to treat a wide range of ailments. The notebook appears to have had two owners. The first page carries the following inscription: Spectans pro me Johanne Casparo Pome. Anno 1691. This is followed by another signature: Jean Jacob Hüber Apoth[ The significance of the first dozen or so leaves is unclear to me. They seem to consist of pious theological musings in German. Followed by a Latin translation. The Latin passages are each preceded by'LV' which presumably stands here for'Latina Versio' I have not been able to identify these passages. The rest of the notebook is taken up with matters apothecarial, with exotic ingredients like"essentia viperarum" ess

BRONZE rail cannon, late 17th to early 18th century
I have revised the item. I am sure most of you knew I meant late 1600s early 1700s or late 17th century early 18th century BRONZE rail cannon. For those of you not familiar with cannons this is a low opening bid! Cannon is very ornate with a diamond design on on the barrel. Condition is very good with no pieces missing or cracks etc. Please have a look at the photos to further assess condition. It has a middle and front sight and a beautiful dark patina from age and likely being buried. If a cannon is bronze(gold-like) in colour it has been cleaned or is a fake. If the cannon has been cleaned the value is decreased significantly! It would be my guess that the cannon was buried by natives to hide it from the Japanese during World War 2. The bore is 2.5 cm or 1inch. Length is 62.50 cm or 25 inches, and weighs about 7.5kg or 15 pounds. It's ... morea perfect size for an office or decoration on a large desk. The rare decorated open swivel or trunnion assists with dating this cannon to well before the 1750's. So. To clarify after 1650 and before 1750. A trunnion(from Old French"trognon" Trunk) is a cylindrical protrusion used as a mounting and/or pivoting point. In a cannon, the trunnions are two projections cast just forward of the center of mass of the cannon. they allowed the muzzle to be raised and lowered easily. The condition of the touch hole would indicate that it was not fired much or at all. This cannon is an antique and over 300 years old. It CANNOT be fired. Due to length a gun license is NOT required. So what were these cannons used for? These cast bronze swivel cannons were mounted on small craft by merchantmen and were effective in providing an easily manoeuverable weapon. They were a popular choice for the defence of ships against pirates in South East Asia. The Phillipines and Malaysia. They also served as a form of currency and were passed down from family to family as heirlooms. This bronze cannon is guaranteed to be from the 16th/17th century. Satisfaction guaranteed!

17 th/18 th Century Arabic Window– Traditional Arabic Architecture This was found in my grandfather’s attic and while we have been able to do a little research. This would present a project for those who are historically and architecturally inclined. We had a historian look at this window and he stated that it was probably from the late 17 th century to the 18 th century. While my grandfather was working in the middle east exploring for oil they periodically came across structures that had long since been abandoned. This is a window that was found buried in sand. While the door itself has not been restored. It does look he polished the wood surrounding the window. As the historian highlighted. The window clearly highlights the“all seeing eye” as is normally found in Arabic culture. Because of the age. It is obviously not symmetrically square. ... moreThe frame measures 19 X 16. The window itself measures 11 5/8 across the bottom and 13 ¾ across the top. The paintings on the window are all natural dyes. At one point. I think there was blues, yellows, reds, and black. The window should be restored but that is outside of my abilities. Hence it is time to let this one go. Throughout their long history the craft traditions of the Islamic world evolved a multitude of styles applied to a great variety of media but always with unifying factors that make them instantly recognizable. Harmony is central. There are two key aspects to the visual structure of Islamic design-calligraphy using Arabic script(one of the world's great calligraphic traditions) and abstract ornamentation using a varied but remarkably integrated visual language. Focusing on Islamic geometric patterns. Simple and complex, man-made and in nature.

Geomancy Sand Divination 17th century Turkish manuscript RAML reading ISLAM
Geomancy(Greek: γεωμαντεία. earth divination" is a method of divination that interprets markings on the ground or the patterns formed by tossed handfuls of soil, rocks, or sand The greek geōmanteía that translates literally to"foresight by earth" it is a translation of the Arabic term‛ilm al-raml. Or sometimes reml, or the"science of the sand" Earlier Greek renditions of this word borrowed the word raml(sand" directly, rendering it as rhamplion or rabolion. Other Arabic names for geomancy include khatt al-raml and darb al-raml Geomancy is thought to have established roots in the Middle East when returning Arabic merchants brought the esoteric knowledge from East Asia via the Silk Road. Divination by sand is for instance mentioned in the stories of Thousand and one nights. Where fortune tellers predict the ... morefuture of kings, evil veziers, and beautiful princesses through reading figures in the sand. http:www.princeton.edu/~ezb/geomancy/geohome.html An excellent website on this less known art of divination. The present work orginates from the Ottoman empire. 51 leaves in its orginal Islamic binding. 23 cm, rebacked) It is a very pretty, well preserved, some pages becoming detached. It is complete. The interesting feature here is, that author says that he translated it from Greek(mostly it was the other way around) It is undated but I would say 17 th or 18 th century. ANTIQUE JAPANESE TSUJIGAHANA TEXTILE ART - 14th-17th Century Embroidery Silk
Tsujigahana. The Flower of Japanese Textile Art” By Toshiko Ito. Published in Tokyo by Kodansha International in 1985. DISCUSSION: Tsujigahana textiles were created in Japan between the 14th and early 17th century. The technique is based on tie-dyeing. To which were added brushed black-ink pictures and patterns and, finally, layers of gold and silver imprints and embroidery. The art died in the early 17th century when plain-weave silk was largely replaced by silks with textured grounds. This beautifully illustrated study of the art, and surviving examples, was written by one of the leading Japan’s foremost textile historians. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8.5”x12” 202 pages, 153 color and 40 black& white illustrations, dust jacket. CONDITION NOTES: A little light wear. But overall fine and clean. QUESTIONS about this item? Antique Oval Frame W/Picture of 17th Century Girl
This is an antique oval picture frame. The frame is solid wood. The picture appears to be a little girl from the 17th Century. I am not an expert on pictures. So I will just state the obvious. The picture appears to be on a type of board which is pretty thick. You can see some water marks or stains up on the top right and down the right side. When you turn the picture towards the light there are scratches. I cannot find any signatures or markings anywhere on the picture. The finishing paper on the back has been torn open. The picture has eyelets and wire. The frame does have a few dents and scratches. 13"T X 10.5"W.

ANTIQUE ENGLISH SILVER 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th Century -Clark Institute
An Exhibition of Silver of the 16th. 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries” Published in Williamstown by the Robert Sterling Clark Art Institute in 1951. DISCUSSION: The very first Clark Art Institute catalog. The exhibition was held at Lawrence Hall of Williams College. As the Introduction notes that the Institute has only recently bought land for the permanent museum building. In 1910. After a distinguished career in the United States Army, Sterling Clark settled in Paris and began collecting works of art, an interest he inherited from his parents. When he married Francine Clary in 1919, she joined him in what quickly became a shared passion. Together they created a remarkable collection of paintings, silver, sculpture, porcelain, drawings, and prints with complete reliance on their own judgments and tastes. In 1950 the Clarks founded the Sterling ... moreand Francine Clark Art Institute as a permanent home for their collection, and the museum first opened to the public in 1955. Since its conception, the Institute has had a dual mission as both a museum and a center for research and higher education. French romantic( 17th century) unique oval tapestry- added to description
This is all the knowledge I could get on this piece in months of research. For all those who know tapestry you be the judge. It is just as I described and same pictures I sent to the one place I could get that knew anything of it. The velvet on the front is worn off in different spots but the weave still shows through. Color and all. I personally believe by age and the strings is was hand woven but in no way could state that as a fact. If there particular pictures or close ups of it, questions I can answer, please feel free to message, since I cannot get a proper I.D. on it, I can only estimate value. If you know what it is I will be willing to take reasonable offers. Hi Bonnie. It looks like a French Romantic(17th century) style influenced by the painter Francois Boucher Seems it was meant for upholstery on an oval chair back or to be framed. ... moreIf the back has lots of strings like hair. It is hand woven; if flat and smooth, Jacquard machine woven(less valuable) That's it! Be well! James. On Wed. Apr 25, 2012 at 1:08 PM, Donald&Bonnie wrote: I have had this tapestry passed down to me through family. It was originally my greatgrandmother's. And I will be 50 this year. I am not asking for a value but wondering if you could just identify it for me. I have been trying to research it but saw all the different kinds, Victorian, Colonial, Belguim, etc. As you can see the material is quite worn but what isn't has the feel of velvet and the back rough like canvas even though a woven string. Any information you could give me to help in my research would be very much appreciated. 1680 17th Century Italian Manuscript Drawing Comet over Rome Design of Engraving
A highly important 1680 XVII century Italian manuscript and initial project design drawing of the famous engraving of the comet passing over Rome with handwritten comments. Folio ca. 37.7 x 30cm. Plain reverse. In 1680 a comet passed over Rome and was visible until November same year. It made a very big impact. As it came with a large bang and was personally described by Gottfried Kirch. In same year an Italian artist in Rome working in Piazza Navona executed a special engraving of the comet depicting the so called"eggs" As well as the way it hits Virgo. Our research has come up with the information that only a single such engraving print had survived from the original printing plate and the print is currently in the collection of Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. Since there was no particular signature applied into the engraving. ... moreThe engraving itself remained unattributed. But was described as 17th Century Italian School. Until now. There was no particular reference as to original project and design after which the plate engraving was done. The present manuscript drawing is a highly important and the actual initial ORIGINAL of the design drawing and project for th e engraving as executed by the artist himself in chalk and wash(watercolor gouache) INCLUDING his original handwriting underneath the drawing. The text is the same as the one that originally came into the engraving later on. BUT also with priceless additional data and information on who ordered the engraving. Etc. While, it is hard to attribute the exact artist having only the museum engraving print as a reference. It could be much easier to attribute the artist having his original hand drawing and sketch. His handwriting and manuscript text. As well as the additional details that appear within. It is quite possible that the drawing could be at tributed either to Bernini himself or Giacinto G imignani. Who also worked in Piazza Navona during that same year. Another possibility as to artist attribution is to the German artist and engraver Fried

Cutting it to the proper weight, then it was smashed it between a pair of dies by a strong-armed Russian. The coins were inscribed on the obverse side with the Czar's name and his titles in Old Russian script. The complete inscription is often partly cut off. ANTIQUE AMERICAN 17th CENTURY FURNITURE -Nutting 1921 Classic Pilgrim Century
Furniture of the Pilgrim Century 1620-1720. Including colonial utensils and hardware” By Wallace Nutting. Published in Boston by Marshall Jones Company in 1921. DISCUSSION: The first book published on the subject of American 17th century furniture. Like all Nutting books. Caution is required in figuring out where the good examples end and the restored or re-manufactured examples begin. This book was beset by controversy almost from the start, as within a year a broadside was circulated by an ironworker stating that he had made many of the examples of ironwork illustrated by Nutting. Still, as with other Nutting books, the sheer volume of furniture illustrated, as well as the important place these volumes have occupied in the literature for over three-quarters of a century, make them worth having. Ames& Ward 1. Speaking of both editions ... moreof the title(which were different enough to really qualify as two different books) notes that they"occasionally contain nuggets of information of use to modern researchers" DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8"x11" 587 pages, hundreds of black& white illustrations. 2.8 gms Treasure Coin, Spanish Colonial Real Silver~ 17th Century, unknown Mint
Macuquinas(cobs) Macuquinas. Also known as"cobs" were used heavily in local transactions in America, although their poor quality produced many complaints. The macuquina's irregular shape invited clipping, and it was usually below legal weight. In 1784(by which time all macuquinas were at least ten years old) the king ordered macuquina in the Indies withdrawn and reminted. The order had to be reissued in 1789, but it remained unfulfilled due to a lack of resources. Cobs are the original"treasure coins. Struck and trimmed by hand in the 16th through 18th centuries at Spanish mints in Mexico. Peru, and Colombia(among others) silver and gold cobs are handsomely crude, nearly all with a cross as the central feature on one side and either a coat-of-arms(shield) or a tic-tac-toe-like"pillars and waves" on the other side. ... moreSilver cobs are known as"reales" and gold cobs are known as"escudos, with two 8 reales(about 27 grams each) equaling one escudo. Some cobs were struck with a date, and most show a mintmark and an initial or monogram for the assayer, the mint official who was responsible for weight and fineness. Size and shape were immaterial, which means that most cobs are far from round or uniform in thickness. Cobs were generally accepted as good currency all around the world, and were the exact coins pirates referred to as"pieces of eight" 8 reales) and"doubloons" any gold cobs but originally 2 escudos) Their design and history have made cobs a very popular choice for jewelry. 1572 cross type silver The new coin design of 1572(new for America. But already being minted in Spain) is known in English as the shield or the cross type. It was known in Mexico asmaquina de papalote y cruz(windmill and cross money) These were hammered coins. Produced quickly, and they generally deteriorated in quality throughout the period. Most cobs were soon melted down to produce coins, jewelry, etc. But many circulated as coin, but their crude appearance invited clipping. And

Magazines, music and random amazing stuff I'm selling by clicking here: Check out my! Note: I will be away from July 9 through August 7. You are welcome to buy from me while I am gone to make sure you get what you want. But please be patient until around August 10 for me to ship. If you can not wait until August 10 for me to ship your item then please do not buy from me now. A note added in 2012: If you see a notice that I will be away from July 9 to August 7 please ignore it. A 17th. century “Westerwald” salt glazed stoneware beer jug around 1690
From an old Dutch stoneware collection I’m offering a German beer jug. The jug was made in Westerwald in Germany at the end of the 17 th. century. The jug is decorated with leaves in manganese in a decorated grey square against a cobalt blue background. On top of the jug there is a pewter lid. Which dates according to my opinion, from a later date The condition of the jug is almost perfect, there are two very small hairlines in the handle and there is a crack in the foot(see pictures) furthermore there are no chips or restorations. The height is approx. 8,5” 21,5 cm) RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fv%7F.rpn34%3E-13d0b0f8070-0x104-

Post Medieval 17th Century Shipwreck Silver 4 Reales Cob Coin Lizard Rill Cove
A wonderful early 17th century silver 4 Reales cob coin salvaged from the famous Rill Cove shipwreck. The infamous Lizard silver wreck was found in Kynance. Cornwall. It is believed that the unidentified ship sank sometime around 1618 carrying large quantities of silver bars and Spanish coins. The coins mostly originate from Peru and Mexico and all are from the reigns of King Philip II and Philip II of Spain, thus representing the earlier coins minted by the Spanish in the New World. Coins from this wreck are often fairly deteriorated due to the conditions of the sea in this area and the constantly shifting sand banks that cover the wreck. The wreck was discovered in 1973 when Ken Simpson and Mike Hall were diving on the wrecked trawler ‘Kerris Reed’ and spotted some iron guns beneath the wreckage. Condition: Fair. Some water erosion, evidence ... moreof the centuries spent under the Cornish sea! Provided with a copy of a certificate of authenticity from the expedition leaders Mike Hall and Ken Simpson.
