Pope Francis was elected on the 13th of March 2013. He was elected on the second day of the papal conclave that gathered following the resignation of his Predecessor Pope Benedict the 16th. His Papal inauguration took place on the 19th March 2013 in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.
Pope Francis is the first Pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit Pope.Pope Francis was born in Buenos Airesas Jorge Mario Bergoglio. Bergoglio completed his theological studies in 1967 and he was ordained as priest on the 13th of December 1969. He chose the papal name Francis in honour of Saint Francis of Assisi. As he is the first Pope to go by this name, he is called Pope Francis the first.
Pope Francis was known throughout his career for his Philanthropic work, his care for the poor and his humility.
Pope Francis is the 266th successor of St. Peter. St. Peter the fisherman was the first Pope. He was martyred in Rome in the 1st century AD.
