1-3/4" humpback framing chisel or slick w/ wood handle marked H A PARK & more
You are bidding on one 1-7/8" wood slick as pictured. It has some condition issues. So please keep reading. It is marked"H A PARK" as shown. But I believe that he was an owner. There are some other faint markings, most that I can't make out, but several letters look like"No. EX" If I were to guess, I would guess PS&W or Peck Stow& Wilcox, but that is just a guess! Blade width at the sharp end is about a 32nd under 1-3/4" Length of the steel portion. Not including the wood handle, is about 9-7/8" and overall length including the handle is about 18-15/16" It has the humpback or rounded shape to the blade. If you define a slick as having the neck and handle remain above the plane of the back of the blade. Then this would not be a slick, as the neck falls below the plane of the back side of ... morethe blade. Including the handle. It weighs about 1 pound 13 ounces on my postal scale. There is some heavy pitting. Mostly on the top side but also on the upper part of the back side and on the neck. And there are some large chips in the sides. A previous owner has done quite a bit of flattening of the back, which eliminated nearly all of the pitting in the first 1-1/2" but it would benefit from some finishing of the flattening work. And there are some deep scratches up towards the neck on the back side. Putting a straightedge on the back yields a gentle wavy shape, touching at the neck, then a gap of maybe a 16th, touching about 1/2" from the sharp edge, and then a slight gap at the sharp edge. Some more flattening of the back would reduce those gaps as well. The handle is a recently turned replacement. That could use a little finishing. SHIPPING: 3 pounds. Up for auction is this rare antique wood and brass double angle carpenter's framing square. This is a beautiful old tool. Exhibits a wonderful age-acquired patina- we left it just as we found it. The wood is not split or cracked, the brass ends are not bent, swivel out easily on each end. Each brass piece extends and rotates a full 360* Fully extended it measures 22 inches long, the short end measures 3 3/4 inches, the longer end about 6 1/2 inches, the wood case alone measures 12 inches and is 1/2 of an inch wide. There appears to be very faint traces of a measuring grid on the wood and possibly very very faint marks on the brass. Estimating this to be from the late 1800's- early 1900's. This is the best hand forged chisel available or timber framing. Log cabins or homes and other demanding wood cutting jobs. The chisel cutting edge is 3/8" wide and the overall length 12-1/8" The chisel has a custom made Cocobolo hardwood handle. The chisel has a leather anti-shock washer between bolster and handle with fitted brass ferrules to prevent the handle from splitting. Honing required before use.
