Antique Framing Square Rare Vintage Carpenters Tool
This is such a neat piece. I go to amish mud sales or as most people know it Auction. These events are so much fun and there are always great antiques Amish made quilts and all sorts of amish made crafts and furniture. A lot of the items are donated to local fire companies by local amish family's. When I saw this piece I just imagined that an Amish man used this square to lay out rafters for a huge barn. Vintage Campbells XXX Lipped Adze - Ship builder Shipwright Timber Framing
Garage sale find. Up for auction is a vintage Campbell XXX Shipwright's Adze which was manufactured in New Brunswick. Canada. As you can see from the photos, this adze is used and shows signs of its age. The edge has dings, but there are no significant chips. The lipped edges are both intact, and the spur is firmly attached. There is no handle with this adze. The previous owner did apply the marking"HBP" at two points on the adze, and they are seen in the photos. The adze is stamped"Campbell's XXX St. John. NB" in two lines. Based on my research, Campbell's was an edged tool manufacturer in the late 1800's in St. John. Campbell and Fowler was established in 1863, becoming W. Campbell in 1879, and then Campbell Bros in 1891. The company closed in 1926. Based on this information, I believe this adze was manufactured ... morein the 1880s since there is no"Bros. in the stamp. I have cleaned this tool using nonabrasive techniques. My cleaning included the removal of some light surface rust and a few years worth of dirt and grime. I have done my best to show the condition of this item. Two of them are 11-1/4" X 10" in size and one is round. 10.5" in diameter. Each has a pale gold colored background and different Oriental style fabric border. The dragons are especially beautiful. here we have a nice old Vaughan 23 oz hammer head that has been all cleaned up. This is an vintage Japanese Carpenters square. It is metric on one side and measured in"sun" pronounced"soon" on the other. A"sun" is equal to 1.193 of an inch. This was from before Japan was metric. There are still some things that are traditionally measured this way in Japanese construction. It is made of thin flexible steel. The chisel is handwrought, so it is from that era. It measures nearly 12" long overall. No pitting at cutting edge. It has been carefully cleaned, sharpened, and oiled to prevent rust.
