RED CROSS - WWI letters SIGNED by heads of Red Cross in America and France, 1917
A superb group of Red Cross correspondence from 1917, including letters signed by the heads of the Red Cross in both America and France during World War I. There are two signed letters from Eliot Wadsworth, a Boston lawyer who was chairman of the American Red Cross from 1916-19. Another letter is signed by H.H. Harjes, an American expatriate banker who was Wadsworth's counterpart in France for the Croix-Rouge Américaine. See below for more on[Henry Herman] Harjes' notable war work. There is also a letter signed by a prominent American diplomat who was the acting U.S. Secretary of State in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. More images are below. The letters were found in the personal correspondence of William Conklin, a wealthy American who was actively engaged in World War I relief efforts through the American Relief Clearing ... moreHouse and other organizations. Conklin's wife was the former Iola Schmidlapp. A Cincinnati heiress of a vast family fortune. Letters are dated between July and December 1917 and concern Conklin's desire to work with the Red Cross on relief in Russia and elsewhere. In chronological order the letters are: Eliot Wadsworth to Conklin. Advising that a ship has sailed for Russia with"a considerable quantity of medical supplies. One-page on the stationery of the American Red Cross in Washington, DC. Signed by Wadsworth in ink. Alvey A. Adee to Conklin. Acknowledging Conkln's letter about sending ambulance and relief workers to Russia and Roumania(Romania. On Department of State stationery, and signed by Adee in ink. H.H. Harjes to Conklin. Also regarding relief for Russia and Roumania. Carbon typescript, on the stationery of the American Red Cross in Paris. Signed by Harjes in ink(a bit faded but fully legible. Some relating to World War II. 1) American National Red Cross certificate issued to Mrs. Retta Scott"In Recognition of Meritorious Personal Service Performed in Behalf of the Nation. Her Armed Forces, and Suffering Humanity in the Second World War. Signed by Wallace Davis, Chapter Chairman. Other signatures include a facsimile of that of Harry Truman, President. Issued May 1946. 2) A letter to Mrs. Scott on American Red Cross letterhead dated August 21. 1946. A part of this letter reads"It gives me pleasure to send you herewith one of these certificates and to notify you that an attract pin(priced 50 cents) is also available for you at the Chapter House, should you desire one. This letter is signed by Wallace Davis, Louisville Chapter Chairman. 3) A white sheet ... morewith red printing describing the various Red Cross Service bars for volunteers.
