Mary O' Leary maintained a clean. Thrifty home in the small rural New England town where she and her dear husband Walter had grown up. They had married in the neighborhood church with all their friends and family members in attendance; since then they had raised a family. Walter had gone off to New York where jobs paid better and were more plentiful. He was a skilled shift mechanic who sent home money to keep the family afloat during the turbulent times of the 1930s. Mary set aside a goodly sum of the money her husband sent home. She hid it all over the house and under the mattress. She even dug holes in the ground where she buried money in jars. She was a hard worker. A perfect partner in life for Walter. It was said that she scrubbed her floors daily on her hands and knees with a soapy bucket and scrub brush, and a stack of clean towels. ... moreShe cooked vast amounts of vegetable soup and stews, using produce grown in her garden out in the back yard. Born of parents who had come to America with dreams in their hearts, she had been taught well the rewards of toil and thrift. Her children were well-mannered, generally speaking well-behaved individuals who knew the nurturing care of a good mother. Here we have a wonderful porcelain lithophane. This has a wonderful picture of mary and baby Jesus on 2 sides and the candle on a heart with the roses under it on the other 2 sides. This lithophane is lit by 3 leds that are battery operated. This is a great idea because the heat from the candles can crack the shade. Here there is no heat from the leds so you don't have to worry about that. This is in great shape and looks beautiful lit up. It is free from any chips or cracks. It is run by 3 AA batteries. For sale is an Vintage Haeger Mother Mary Madonna Praying. This beautiful statue/planter is satin White and stands 9" Tall x 5.25" wide x 6" deep and was made in the late 1950's. The piece is in good used vintage condition with no chips or serious cracks. There is a tiny hairline on the left side of the planter portion( see photo#6) and some staining inside the planter box. It could use a soaking in some diluted clorox to clean up any scuff marks. Please examine the photos carefully. Pendant and pin/ brooch combination. Set in 800 silver. Carved cameo appears to be carved shell with fantastic dimension and shadowing. Some light discoloration spots from age. Silver is slightly tarnished. The pendant hook is a little flattened. But still works properly. I have shown many pictures. This is a beautiful piece in person. Measures about 1.25" tall.
