Most often found in sculpture. As such, it is a particular form of the Lamentation of Christ, a scene from the Passion of Christ found in cycles of the Life of Christ. When Christ and the Virgin are surrounded by other figures from the New Testament, the subject is strictly called a Lamentation in English, although Pietà is often used for this as well, and is the normal term in Italian. Context and development: Pietà is one of the three common artistic representations of a sorrowful Virgin Mary. The other two being Mater Dolorosa(Mother of Sorrows) and Stabat Mater(here stands the mother) The other two representations are most commonly found in paintings, rather than sculpture, although combined forms exist. The Pietà developed in Germany(where it is called the"Vesperbild" about 1300. Reached Italy about 1400, and was especially popular in Central European Andachtsbilder. There is a gold and black foil tag that has INARCO over a world globe JAPAN. There are no chips or cracks that I could see. Needs a good cleaning. Has all over crazing. Hi All: Up for auction is an absolutely beautiful antique framed print of THE HOLY MOTHER MARY AND THE MYSTERIES OF THE ROSARY. This wonderful piece is over 100 years old. We removed the back of the frame and found the newspaper shown in the pictures. The paper is The World newspaper with a date of June 22nd, 1903, it even has a baseball box score of the Pittsburgh Pirates with the famous player Honus Wagner. The pictures don't do this wonderful print justice it is very detailed and colorful. I believe this is the original frame. The frame measures 22 inches by 17 inches. I believe this is a hard plastic material or resin material. There are a few small holes in the base of Jesus the round part but those are imperfections in the mold. Mary does have a small chip on her right finger. Otherwise good preowned vintage condition. This is a great vintage Mother Mary Praying Madonna Headvase Head Vase Planter. She is in creamy white glaze with a rear planter designed with a dimpled effect that looks like basket weave. She stands 7-3/4" tall. There is no maker's mark. She has tiny rough spots along the top of her scarf. And some small chips along the base. This lovely statue belongs to my 88 year old Aunt who has had it stored in it's original box for about 50 years(she thinks) I'm not sure what it is made of but it is some kind of man-made material.
