Hardcover book in original binding of leather and marbled paper, 5.75 x 8.5 inches(146 x 216 mm) Light external wear; light foxing and damp staining throughout; one leaf(pages 41-42, see scan) has a large tear that has been sewn together long ago. The binding is tight, and the book is in good condition overall. Edkins(1823-1905) spent 57 years in China. As a missionary for 32 years and subsequently as a translator for Imperial Maritime Customs. He was working in Shanghai at the London Missionary Society Press under W.H. Medhurst during the publication of the Society's Chinese Bible(completed ... more1847) and Medhurst's pioneering Chinese dictionary(1848) Edkins modeled his dictionary of Shanghai dialect on Medhurst's dictionary of Hokkien, but Edkins had a broader perspective on Chinese society and culture than many of his fellow missionaries. This is reflected in the breadth of his entries; see for example, the scan below of the detailed entry on"Tea" This is apparently the only edition of this dictionary, and I believe it is the first substantial dictionary of the Shanghai dialect. HARDCOVER Isaac Israeli ben Joseph or Yitzhak ben Yosef(often known as Isaac Israeli the Younger) was a Spanish-Jewish astronomer/astrologer who flourished at Toledo in the first half of the fourteenth century. He was a pupil of Asher ben Yehiel. At whose request(in 1310) he wrote the astronomical work Yesod Olam, the best contribution on that subject to Hebrew literature. It treats of geometry and trigonometry as introductory to the subject-matter; of the structure and position of the globe; of the number and movements of the celestial spheres; of the time differences in days and nights in the various parts of the earth; of the movements of sun and moon; of the solstices. The neomeniæ, the eclipses, and the leap-years; it contains as well astronomical tables(an ... moreephemeris) and a perpetual calendar. It also deals(iv, § 17) with the chronological systems of other nations and religions, especially Christianity; and gives(iv, § 18) in chronological order the noted personages of the Biblical, Talmudic, and geonic periods, following the Sefer ha-Qabbalah of Abraham ibn Daud. Whose name would be changed to St. Joseph when the village was incorporated in 1834. Situated across Lake Michigan from Chicago, St. Joseph received its first lighthouse in 1832, just months after the first lighthouse on Lake Michigan commenced operation at Chicago. 1859 St. Joseph Lighthouse Photograph courtesy National Archives, St. Joseph’s first lighthouse consisted of a conical. Rubblestone tower topped by a four-inch-thick soapstone deck and an octagonal lantern room. A single-story stone ... moredwelling was built nearby for the keeper of the light. John Scott was awarded a $2,700 contract for constructing the tower and dwelling, and Winslow Lewis received $500 for installing eleven of his patent lamps and fourteen-inch reflectors.
